13 Years Later, Game of Thrones Movie Officially in Development at Warner Bros.

The world of Westeros has come a long way from the brain of George R.R. Martin. First, he wrote A Song of Ice and Fire, which has yet to officially conclude. HBO’s Game of Thrones TV adaptation, however, wrapped up in 2019. Since then, there have been multiple prequel series released in both book and TV form, from House of the Dragon to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Fans have long wished for a Game of Thrones movie, and now their dreams are coming true. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has begun early development of a movie set in everyone’s favorite dark fantasy world. Writer Beau Willimon, whose previous credits include Andor and House of Cards, is attached to the film.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, George R.R. Martin shared the biggest struggle keeping him from finishing The Winds of Winter.

Warner Bros. Begins Development on Game of Thrones Movie

A potential Game of Thrones movie has been an idea since 2013, back when the HBO showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss were working through ideas about how to end the fantasy series. One idea was to present the finale in three feature films, like The Lord of the Rings. This idea never saw the light of day, however, since HBO executives wanted to stick close to their subscription business model.

We first learned about a possible Game of Thrones movie in THR‘s profile of Martin. In that interview, we heard how HBO and Warner Bros. were simultaneously working on competing versions of King Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros, a storyline usually shortened to just Aegon’s Conquest. Warner Bros.’ GoT movie will likely be a huge-feature length film like Dune.

Warner Bros. has been a big name in entertainment news lately. After a proposed Netflix acquisition that never went through, Warner Bros. is now set to be sold to Paramount Skydance. The studio’s in-flux status naturally means that any projects currently in development could be scrapped or put on hold, but that’s not likely to be the case with the new Game of Thrones movie.

Paramount CEO David Ellison was recently asked what his favorite HBO show was, to which he replied Game of Thrones. With that in mind, fans can hope that Ellison would have some sway over making the movie happen.
