MMOs have a niche audience, and that’s even more true for console MMO releases. However, the Xbox Series X/S has a multitude of MMOs available for players to try. Ranging from classic high-fantasy MMORPGs, to relaxing creature-collecting MMOs, there is something available for everyone.

Sometimes, players just want to boot up an MMO, grind out some training, and relax, and these games provide the ultimate opportunities for gamers to do so on the Xbox Series X/S. These titles prove that the genre isn’t just restricted to the PC and that there are plenty of great MMOs available for console gamers.

However, this doesn’t mean the Xbox doesn’t have its fair share of enjoyable MMORPG experiences, especially if players know what they’re looking for. One specific new MMORPG has been made playable in the Xbox Series X/S that surprises fans with the combination of the nostalgic tab-target MMO formula, unique shapeshifting and travel mechanics, and an interesting story that undeniably makes the game the spiritual successor to Lineage.

*Throne And Liberty

A Decent Lineage Spiritual Successor With An Interesting Travel Mechanic

Originally announced as Lineage Eternal in 2011, NCSoft’s Throne and Liberty positions itself as not just a Lineage successor (as opposed to its original conception as a sequel) but as a compelling modernization of the guild-focused MMO. As per usual, players of Throne and Liberty enter the world as a special child with abilities crucial in the defeat of the evil Kazar. However, the MMO really shines in its unique take on the tab-target MMO formula. Innovations include morphing into animals for travel, shapeshifting into monsters for stealth, and even calling forth bosses as allies after defeating them. The day/night cycle can alter monster spawns in an area, while weather shifts affect not just the environment but also the way certain abilities work.

Players themselves aren’t stuck with specific classes, but instead have interchangeable weapons that can dynamically change their builds to adjust party needs. The game also has an abundance of dynamic PVE events, solo dungeons, and co-op dungeons to satisfy traditional MMO fans. However, it’s the PVP-centric nature of Throne and Liberty where the game shines. There are frequent open-world boss raids that demand almost an army of players to fight. And if players prefer fighting each other, they can contest control over Boonstones and Riftstone in Conquest Battles and even siege Stonegard Castle in Guild Battles. Players who don’t like the intensity of Black Desert Online or the uber-familiar World of Warcraft can find a decent middle ground with Throne and Liberty.

The First Descendant

A Decent Looter-Shooter Bogged Down By Grinding

Set in the world of Ingris devastated by invasions from the alien Vulgus and Colossi race, it’s only thanks to a renegade Vulgus faction called the Magisters that remnants of humanity survived in The First Descendant. The eponymous characters of the game are Descendants, or beings whose dormant Arche gene were activated to force their evolution. Armed with advanced weapons and unique abilities, players can use different Descendants and their different playstyles to wreak havoc on the battlefield in different ways.

The game isn’t necessarily without its flaws, especially for fans of looter shooters who might notice The First Descendant being too grindy for its own good. Despite boasting a selection of interesting enemies and massive boss fights, the abundance of repetitive quests and rather grindy opponents can ruin the fun of the game. Thankfully, First Descendant does boast an equally diverse cast of characters with unique abilities to make sure shooting enemies can be done in a ton of different ways, giving the genre a much-needed change of pace.

New World: Aeternum

A More Refined Version Of New World

Although New World: Aeternum at first glance seemed like a conversion of the original New World game into an action RPG-esque equivalent upon its release for the Xbox Series X/S, fans and newcomers to the franchise will be graced with a retooled MMO that is as welcoming to hardcore players as it is to newcomers. The game retains its original premise — that of explorers in the Mid-17th Century fight for control in the mysterious land of Aeternum — this time with a better focus on the solo and co-op experience, streamlined mechanics for controllers, as well as cutscenes that have done a great deal in helping players immerse in this fantastical take on the Age of Colonization.

Gameplay-wise, New World: Aeternum packs all patches and updates to the original package and releases it to consoles with new content. This means players can still enjoy the game’s noteworthy weapon-based combat, where players learn skills and mechanics based on the weapons they create and not necessarily on a “class” they pick. Streamlined controls for consoles alongside a new lock-on feature meant more solid connecting hits for melee users and more tactical prowess for ranged combatants. Moreover, the game retains its rewarding Crafting System, where most of the game’s best items and tools are often made instead of looted.

TERA

A Traditional MMO That Features Third-Person Targeting

Released originally in 2011, TERA is notable for integrating the traditional MMO experience of questing, grinding, and PVP with real-time third-person targeting. Set in a world besieged by the metallic Argons of the Underworld, players become members of the Valkyrion Federation to stop their threat. While the PC servers were shut down in 2022, the console versions that were released in 2020 remain functional today.

Despite its age, TERA‘s focus on more rhythmic and methodical skill rotations per class can be a nostalgic refresh compared to today’s more hyperintensive MMOs. However, TERA does suffer from MMO hurdles, such as gritty encounters and applying a skill-intensive system to a real-time targeting system. Regardless, it remains a must-try for Xbox players who want a challenging classic MMO experience.

Final Fantasy 14

Allows Players To Become Warriors Of Light On A Far-Reaching Journey

The much-awaited Xbox release of Final Fantasy 14 finally happened in March 2024, bringing with it A Realm Reborn and the entirety of the MMO’s current releases. Set in Eorzea, players take on the role of the Warrior of Light destined to save the world from various threats. Gameplay involves players leveling up a selected Job with unique abilities sprawled across a traditional MMO-based skill rotation system, and FF14 is especially praised for an intuitive controller-supported interface.

Fans who want a “definitive” MMO experience on the Xbox would appreciate the in-depth story, raiding culture, and community-driven elements of FF14. Its interface can be especially thrilling for players who want the same PC-esque complexity of an MMO while using a controller, as the game’s Cross Hotbar allows players to seamlessly transition between commands by simply holding the shoulder button and a corresponding D-pad or face button.

Although launching with a rocky start, which seems to be a reoccurring theme for MMOs, Fallout 76 has found its identity and now proves to be an unmissable game for Fallout fans.
