When the games are designed in a kill-or-be-killed manner, it’s expected that alliances will form in order to succeed and take out the competition.

The beauty of Squid Game is its ability to bring together people from different backgrounds and situations, all of whom have had some kind of financial difficulty or struggle. Shared pain is a great way of bringing people together, only amplified by the need to stick together in order to make it out alive.

Mr. Kim & Woo-seok

Faithful Companions In Life And Death

The dynamic duo on the outside are employed by Gi-hun himself and given the task of hunting down everything connected to the games. As things take a turn for good and they manage to spot the recruiter, the two trail from afar, following and making comedic quips and remarks as they go.

But in a matter of moments, things are flipped on their head. They are kidnapped and held at gunpoint, and forced to play a sadistic game which ends tragically with Mr Kim losing his life. Distraught and eager for revenge, Woo-seok then sets out to assist Gi-hun in any way possible in order to avenge the death of his co-worker and beloved friend.

Park Jung-bae & Gi-hun

Old Friends, New Teammates

With so much death and suffering all around, it is nice to have a good friendship to break up the tension with comedy and sincere conversation. These two are a treat to watch on-screen, having constant references to their past, with the action sequences interwoven with flashbacks of them gambling and cheering together.

Kang Sae-byeok & Ji-yeong

A Needed Sacrifice

The camaraderie and friendship here is both charming and heartbreaking. Being introduced in tug-of-war, one of the most nerve-racking games of the first season, they slowly become closer, despite their differences at first.

However, in classic Squid Game fashion, friendship means nothing when the game is a head-to-head competition, where the winner moves on and the loser is left for dead. They deliberate and bond, until finally Ji-yeong decides to sacrifice herself, realizing there is nothing in the outside world left for her and breaking the hearts of viewers in the process.

Thanos & Nam-gyu

Comedic Relief Amidst The Carnage

It didn’t take long for Thanos to become a fan favorite in the games. His arrogant personality and lack of care for those around him makes him both obnoxious and hilarious at the same time. He quite literally dances in the games, drugged up and ready to put others down wherever possible.

Nam-gyu is much more of a follower than a leader. He takes the right-hand man position next to Thanos, following his command and working together through each game they encounter. They are funny, they don’t care, and it comes back to bite them in the end.

Park Min-su & Se-mi

Pushing Back Against The Bullies

Se-mi is witty, cunning, and doesn’t like to be pushed around or watch it happen to others. While Thanos is running around causing havoc and making advances towards her, she fights back with great comebacks and quips and him and his gang of goons.

Min-su, by contrast, is timid, shy, and very easily pushed around. Se-mi seems to see something in him, whether romantically, as a friend, or as a sisterly figure. She helps him and he helps her, but in the end, there is little he can do to aid her in the massacre.

Cho Hyun-ju & Jang Geum-ja

Looking Past Their Differences

Cho Hyun-ju is an incredible character. Openly trans, and a powerful woman, she conducts herself with a reservation but confidence at all times. Geum-ja at first seems to find issue with who Hyan-ju is, making a few comments that could certainly be taken the wrong way.

As the games progress, however, the two come together and form a nice friendship, bonding over the thought of eating dinner as a group and both wanting the same outcome: to leave the games alive.

Kang Dae-ho & Park Jung-bae

Mutual Respect For A Fellow Soldier

When Jung-bae isn’t sitting close with Gi-hun, he is exclaiming his pride as a marine with his comrade Dae-ho. They show one another their tattoos and quickly form an unbreakable bond, doing whatever they can to help each other and those around them.

What they lack in smarts, they more than make up for in excitement and energy. Ready to enact the plan, the group breaks out and begins their assault, but while Jung-bae shows courage and fights on ahead, Dae-ho shows his true fear and breaks down, effectively leaving the others to die. They had a great bond, but in the end, fear trumps all.

Gi-hun & Player 001

Kind And Caring With A Dark Secret

A twist that no one could have predicted, Gi-hun shows so much warmth, compassion, and regret towards both 001 players. In the first season, he cares for the old man and, despite having him on his team during the game of strength, powers through and manages to succeed. He later shows remorse and mourns his death, until his true identity is later revealed.

The same can be said in the second season. 001 once again bonds with Gi-hun from the get-go, with his actual intentions and role in the show being completely unknown to Gi-hun. It is unclear whether he will discover the truth or if his friendship will lead to his downfall in the end.
