8BitDo Debuts a New Translucent Green Ultimate Controller Inspired by the Original Xbox

8BitDo, known for their retro gaming gear, is back with another nod to the original Xbox. After releasing the Retro 87 keyboard and Retro R8 mouse inspired by the original special edition Halo console, controller fans are now getting the same treatment.

The peripheral maker has unveiled a new colorway for its 8BitDo Ultimate 3-mode Controller for Xbox, now available for pre-order on Amazon for $70. The new “Jade” variant features a translucent green finish reminiscent of the iconic Xbox.

Initially released in black and white, the 8BitDo Ultimate 3-mode Controller for Xbox is an official Xbox-licensed version of their Ultimate controller, which we’ve recommended in our controller buying guide. It works with Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One (though, unfortunately, not the original Xbox) and includes a charging dock. Priced at $70, the new Xbox-themed colorway comes at no extra cost.

For Xbox fans, this new Jade Ultimate 3-mode Controller is a real nostalgia trip, bringing back the iconic green from the original Halo-themed Xbox. Much like the console, the translucent shell lets you peek at the controller’s inner workings, making it one of the most sophisticated and fine-looking Xbox controllers. If you grew up playing the original Xbox, this controller is one of the best ways to relive those memories. The Ultimate 3-mode Controller for Xbox—Jade ships on May 15th, but you can lock in your order today.

Aside from the aesthetic upgrade, the new controller is similar to the original. It features the same Xbox layout, two rear buttons, and drift-free Hall Effect joysticks and triggers, making it more durable and accurate than regular Xbox controllers. Plus, it supports impulse triggers and vibrations on Xbox, with even more customization options like custom profiles and button remapping in the 8BitDo Ultimate Software. In addition to the Xbox, it also works with PC, Apple, and Android devices.

Transparent tech is making a huge comeback, and controllers are leading the way in gaming. Xbox’s Cipher editions offer a clear view of their inner workings, and third-party manufacturers like GameSir (Kaleid) and PDP Gaming (Afterglow) are also embracing the trend. However, what’s cool is how 8BitDo has managed to make these new transparent peripherals feel truly nostalgic, and it isn’t the only brand.

Back at CES 2025, Hyperkin announced the Special Edition Greenhaven Duchess, a translucent green colorway of its official replica of the original Xbox controller. While the Hyperkin controller doesn’t have a definitive release date, Backbone jumped the gun with its Backbone One – Xbox Edition, which is now available for purchase. Much like 8BitDo’s and Hyperkin’s versions, the Backbone One controller features the same see-through green finish inspired by the original Xbox.

If you’re into retro gaming, these new transparent controllers will make a perfect addition to any retro Xbox setup. Previous 8BitDo controllers have scored highly among reviewers and users alike, and we have no doubt this new Xbox-themed version will be just as impressive. At $70, it undercuts the official Xbox offerings by $5 while providing a charging dock and durable Hall Effect joysticks. It’s hard to go wrong if you’re looking for a durable, retro-style gaming controller for your Xbox Series X/S.
