How to Lockpick in Oblivion Remastered
Lockpicking becomes an important skill in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, so here’s how to master the mechanics of thievery.
The Ultimate Heist quest in Oblivion Remastered might stump some, but if players are to become the new Gray Fox and the guildmaster of the Thieves Guild, they are going to want to complete this quest to triumph as more than a master thief.
How to Start The Ultimate Heist Quest in Oblivion Remastered
The Ultimate Heist quest will activate once players have fenced 1,000 Gold in stolen items at any of the available Thieves Guild Fences throughout Cyrodiil. After fencing 1,000 Gold, hang around the Imperial City and use the wait function for 24 hours. Upon doing so, Amusei will once again give the player a message to see the Gray Fox. This time, the Gray Fox is located in Othrelos’ House, in the Elven Gardens District of the Imperial City. After speaking with the Gray Fox, the Ultimate Heist quest will begin.
There are quite a few locked doors in this quest, so it’s recommended to bring the Skeleton Key, available at Level 10 onwards. A Bow is also recommended for a later step in the quest, but it’s not necessary, as skeleton enemies will drop one that will be found later.
How to Open the Old Way in Oblivion Remastered
The first step of The Ultimate Heist involves opening a secret route called the Old Way. To do so, players simply need to travel to the Imperial Palace. Once inside, head left to reach the Palace Basement, although it is a restricted area once inside, so make sure you are in stealth for this part. Once in the Palace Basement, there is only one guard to worry about, so sneak past him to the east corner of the area where there is an hourglass known as the Glass of Time, which can be activated. Now, leave the Imperial Palace and enter the South East Tunnel found in the Imperial City Arboretum.
The sewers can be overwhelming, so we’ve listed a step-by-step of where to go so that players can reach the Old Way with ease:
- Head through the locked gate and activate the turn wheel found below the stone bridge to open a closed gate.
- Through the now-open gate, activate the turn wheel on the right and then enter through the gate using the sewer water on the left.
- Take the north door to the Beneath the Bloodworks area.
- Inside the Beneath the Bloodworks area, take the first right, then a left, and drop down the stone bridge to open a gate. Past this gate is another gate with a turn wheel to activate.
- Drop down from the bridge and head through the south gate and follow the east gate, where, up the stairs to the right, is another turn wheel.
- Drop from the stone bridge and head through the now-open gate, then activate the turn wheel in the north and head through the sewer passage that’s just opened in the west area. Inside is a locked door that can be opened with the Imperial Sewer Key, which leads to the Palace Sewers.
- Inside the Palace Sewers, follow the linear path through and the marker on the HUD to the Old Way, where once inside, players can take a left through another door called the Old Way, and then head through the hole in the wall at the west side.
At this point, players would have progressed deeper inside the cave to reach the Lost Catacombs, where at the end of the cave, they are in a stone room with two red crystals and a locked door. To progress through this area, equip the Boots of Springheel Jak and then jump on the pillar on the left of the room, where a Press Block can be activated. Follow this upper area to the right, where a second Press Block can be activated, and now the locked gate at the end of the corridor is opened, allowing players to access the Hall of Epochs.
How to Solve the Hall of Epochs Puzzle in Oblivion Remastered
Now that players are in the Hall of Epochs main chamber, they are going to want to head up the stairs and hug the wall to the right until they find a locked gate that can be opened with lockpicks. Take an immediate right after the locked door to activate a Press Block, then head further down in this room to find another room inside the Hall of Epochs. Once inside the new area, head through to the north wall to find a secret passage, and then follow through to the secret entrance on the south passage. Within this room is another Press Block needed for the central puzzle, so be sure to return to the main area of the Hall of Epochs.
Once back in the central area of the Hall of Epochs, equip a bow or kill the skeleton archer that has one. Now, step onto the pressure plate at the back of this room, which will see the stone statue reveal a keyhole in its chest. While on the pressure plate, equip the Arrow of Extrication in your inventory and create a quicksave (just so if you miss the shot, you don’t have to pick up the arrow, you can just reload a save). To successfully shoot the Arrow of Extrication into the stone statue by aiming the reticle at the head. The image above shows where the reticle should be for the perfect shot. After hitting the right shot, head to the stone statue and enter inside, but be warned of the stone Ayleid Guardians that must be fought.
It’s important to save here, as being caught before getting the Elder Scroll will fail the quest, so reloading a save might be required.
Before entering the Imperial Guard Quarters, use the wait time function until it’s 1 AM so that the guards inside are sleeping. Also, try to have a great level of sneak skill and unequipped armor to remain undetected. Head through the Imperial Guard Quarters and follow the right corridors, being careful of the singular guard that patrols forward. Simply stay behind this guard, and enter the first room found on the left, which takes players into the Elder Scrolls Library.
Inside the Elder Scrolls Library, head through the right corridor to get behind a blind Moth Monk and activate the switch behind him. Now, head back to where you entered the Elder Scrolls Library through sneak, and enter the main chamber and sit in the Reading Chair. Waiting in this chair, and without speaking to the monks, will see one of the monks drop the Elder Scroll for players to read. When the coast is clear, steal the Elder Scroll and head upstairs through the upper levels of the Elder Scrolls Library.
On the shelves by the Reading Chair is a scroll of Shadow, which, when used, allows players to have 50% Chameleon for better stealth. Feel free to grab this scroll for use later in the quest.
How to Escape the Imperial Palace in Oblivion Remastered
Now that players have the Elder Scroll, use any invisibility spells or shadow scrolls to gain as much chameleon as possible, and then head east to the upper area of the Moth Priest’s Quarters. Once inside, continue east and ignore the locked rooms until you reach the Imperial Battlemage’s Chambers. At this point, players should equip the Boots of Springheel Jak or else they will die from fall damage.
This is the final room before the escape, so take the first locked wooden door where players must avoid Evangeline Beanique (try not to kill her as it results in expulsion from the Mages Guild). Inside this room is a fireplace, and players can look down to enter it, which will cause them to fall deep into the sewers, causing no fall damage, but breaking the Boots of Springheel Jak permanently. Now that players are back in the sewers, head out through the way you came in to exit and return to the Gray Fox at Othrelos’ House, in the Elven Gardens District.
How to Complete The Ultimate Heist Quest in Oblivion Remastered
With the Elder Scroll given to the Gray Fox, it’s time to complete the quest. This can be completed rather easily, as the Gray Fox has tasked players with giving a ring to Countess Millona Umbranox, who can be found at Castle Anvil. Upon giving Countess Anvil the ring, the Gray Fox will appear, and a cutscene will play. The Gray Fox uses the Elder Scroll to alter time itself, renouncing his identity as the Gray Fox so that he can become Corvus again, the husband of the Countess of Anvil.
Players are rewarded with the Guildmaster title for the Thieves Guild, along with their own Guildmaster Chambers found in the newly crafted Thieves Guild Hall at Dareloth’s House in the Waterfront District. Lastly, players will have the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal, which is a fun souvenir, but not something players should often use. The Gray Cowl of Nocturnal will cause all guards to be hostile when the cowl is equipped, but the advantage is that players have 25 points of sneak and 200 points of feather, along with detect life in a 120-foot radius.
