Returnal developer Housemarque is celebrating the game’s fourth anniversary by releasing an update with official PlayStation 5 Pro support. Housemarque’s roguelike third-person shooter is now officially enhanced for the PlayStation 5 Pro, with the latest patch adding up to 2.5x the pixels on Sony’s newest console, allowing Returnal fans to experience the title with a higher resolution.
After launching in 2021, Returnal quickly cemented itself as one of the best PlayStation 5 games around. Its mix of roguelike elements and third-person shooter received high praise from both critics and fans, but its punishing gameplay loop is a challenge for even the most hardcore gamers. With five bosses and countless other enemies for players to defeat, four years on, Returnal still has fans coming back for more. And with a new PlayStation 5 Pro patch now available, Returnal fans have even more reason to jump back into the chaotic, action-packed shooter.

Returnal Receives PS5 Pro Enhanced Update
Returnal is officially celebrating its fourth anniversary with a new PlayStation 5 Pro enhanced update, Housemarque has announced. In a new post on Twitter, the developer announced that the update is now available for download, featuring up to 2.5 times the pixels on the new Pro console, thus allowing for a higher-resolution experience. No patch notes were shared for the big PlayStation 5 Pro update, so it’s unclear if any other graphical changes were made. Nevertheless, for those with a PlayStation 5 Pro, it looks like now is the perfect time to check out Housemarque’s smash hit roguelike.
Last year, Housemarque celebrated Returnal‘s third anniversary by releasing a special graphic novel. A teaser prior to the announcement had many speculating that the studio was gearing up to announce a sequel or DLC, but Housemarque instead revealed a graphic novel known as Returnal: Fallen Asteria. The novel was made in collaboration with Dark Horse Comics and delved deeper into the world of Returnal.
While some fans were disappointed by this reveal, Housemarque did unveil a brand-new IP, known as Saros, earlier this year. Although it’s not exactly Returnal 2, the studio says Saros is the “ultimate evolution” of Housemarque’s gameplay-first experience. According to the game’s creative director, Gregory Louden, a key distinction between Saros and Returnal is the permanent resources and progression. Like Returnal, the world of Saros will change with every death, but the game allows players to choose and permanently upgrade their loadout from an evolving set of weapons to “come back stronger.”
Returnal is just the latest title to receive a significant boost on the PlayStation 5 Pro, as titles such as Forza Horizon 5, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and many more have benefited from new updates. With PlayStation 5’s lead architect Mark Cerny also confirming that the PS5 Pro will be upgrading its PSSR feature in 2026, the console is quickly becoming one of the best ways to experience PS5 games.
