Harry Potter was fostered by his uncle and aunt, Vernon and Petunia Dursley, until he came of age to attend Hogwarts. At just one-year-old, Harry was brought to Privet Drive by Rubeus Hagrid and left on the doorstep of the Dursleys by Albus Dumbledore. He endured many hardships under the Dursleys’ roof, and even though Aunt Petunia was his late mother’s sister, there was no limit to her cold and harsh treatment.
In the Harry Potter franchise, Harry spent roughly the next ten years with the Dursleys, unaware of his true heritage. He slept in the cupboard under the stairs, wore his cousin Dudley’s oversized hand-me-downs, and peered through glasses held together with Scotch tape. All of this pointed to one thing: Harry was never a welcome presence at the Dursleys’ household, or properly cared for. After he began attending Hogwarts, they sent him trinkets for Christmas presents and gave him other demeaning things, such as dog biscuits from Vernon’s sister, Marge. While these gifts are insignificant, they have invited debate over whether they somehow foreshadow the Deathly Hallows.
Harry Potter: HBO’s New Diagon Alley Leaks
HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter reboot has put significant effort into constructing Diagon Alley in an effort to usher fans into the Wizarding World.
The Dursleys Treated Harry Like Garbage
As seen in Harry Potter, the Dursleys’ relationship with Harry was devoid of any real familial affection. They left him in the care of Mrs. Figg on Dudley’s birthday while they took their boy and his friend out. Aunt Petunia herself admitted that Vernon’s sister, Marge, despised Harry, and one time, Dudley fought to stop him from accompanying them on his birthday outing.
Dudley and his gang often bullied Harry, chasing him around the schoolyard. In one instance, Aunt Petunia forced him to wear Dudley’s old sweater. On another occasion, she cut his unnaturally fast-growing hair with a pair of kitchen scissors. Uncle Vernon frequently threatened to confine him in his cupboard, and this was his modus operandi for punishment. Admittedly, Dudley changed after the Dementor attack, even letting Harry know that he was not “a waste of space” in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Dudley bid Harry a warm goodbye before departing from Privet Drive; his uncle and aunt, however, remained emotionally distant as ever. Dudley’s attitude had changed after the attack, and the author J. K. Rowling later revealed they were on “Christmas card terms” (via TIME), often visiting each other.
HBO Harry Potter Reveals Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff & Ravenclaw Cast
HBO’s Harry Potter TV reboot has wasted no time expanding its universe, casting characters across all four Hogwarts houses.
The Dusleys hid Harry’s identity, lying to him about the truth of his parents’ death. That they died in a car crash was all he was told, and they decided that he would attend a local school named Stonewall High, while Dudley was set to go to Smeltings. This changed when Harry finally came face-to-face with the Keeper of Keys, Hagrid, at the shack out at sea. Harry attended Hogwarts, embraced his magical heritage, and only saw the Dursleys when he was off for the summer. He did not spend time with them during the Christmas holidays, and sometimes received odd bits from them out of pure spite. They included a fifty-pence piece in his first year, enclosed in a small parcel containing a note:
We received your message and enclose your Christmas present.
In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the Dursleys sent him a toothpick and a curt note asking him to find out whether he would be able to stay at Hogwarts for the summer vacation, too. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry ended up receiving a single tissue, deemed an all-time low. At another point, Harry also received a box of dog biscuits from Vernon’s sister, Marge, at Dudley’s birthday party, underscoring the Dursleys’ practice of mocking him through their “presents.”
Harry’s Christmas Gifts From The Dursleys Don’t Foreshadow The Deathly Hallows
While Redditor iShootWithACamera suggests that the gifts Harry received from the Dursleys set up the Deathly Hallows, arguing that Rowling “planned it, even if subconsciously,” there is little evidence to support this as anything more than fan speculation. Although the Deathly Hallows play a key role in Harry Potter lore, to suggest that the Dursleys had any awareness of the prophecy complicates the narrative. Attributing this setup to Rowling is only simplistic thinking.
The Redditor’s post has been picked up by major outlets, including ScreenRant, but the Christmas gifts from the Dursleys are entirely consistent with their established pettiness, which escalates with time. They are not deliberate clues or hints at the Deathly Hallows, but only reinforce Vernon and Petunia’s habitual belittling of Harry. The 50-pence coin, toothpick, and a single tissue do not have a connection to Harry’s endgame, and the Redditor is simply forcing a theory that cannot be verified.
