Marvel Rivals hit the scene at the end of 2024, and since then, it’s continued to bring exciting post-launch content to players. With its blend of Marvel heavy-hitters, like Spider-Man and Thor, and lesser-known characters, like Jeff the Land Shark, Marvel Rivals has a lot of fun with its character roster.

Now that Marvel Rivals has proven that a superhero-focused hero shooter can work really well, DC Comics now has the opportunity to jump on board. After the cancellation of Monolith’s Wonder Woman and the shutdown of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, DC is in need of a win in gaming. Taking note of Marvel Rivals may do the trick, but if DC also wants to set itself apart, adapting DC All-In’s Absolute Universe could be the key to success.

DC All-In brings two narrative universes to readers, with one of them being the Absolute Universe. This new comic universe puts exciting spins on the likes of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, giving some of DC’s biggest stars completely new backstories. In Absolute Batman, Bruce Wayne is a blue-collar civil engineer in his mid-20s. Absolute Superman‘s Kal-El gets to live his first few years on Krypton before its demise, completely changing his connection to his Kryptonian roots. With Absolute Wonder Woman, Diana is raised in Hell by the witch Circe, making her powers more focused on sorcery. Not only are these changes compelling, but they also serve as the blueprint for a fun take on a DC-based hero shooter.

In the Absolute Universe, Batman’s chest plate also doubles as an axe head that he attaches to a handle.

Absolute Universe’s Big Three Fit Perfectly Into the Hero Shooter Mold

Wonder Woman – Support

For those who have seen the artwork of Absolute Batman, one of the most notable differences with Bruce Wayne is that he is physically huge. His hulking size and brute strength make him the ideal candidate for a Tank, while Superman’s overall power and versatility make him the best choice to take on a Damage role. Also, since Wonder Woman now has a more mystical edge in the Absolute Universe, it’s quite easy to imagine her being a strong Support character.

Other DC heroes that have been featured in the Absolute Universe, like the Flash and Green Lantern, would naturally help pad out the roster, but Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman would serve as the core. Of course, there is the issue of the Absolute Universe currently not being as vast and fleshed out as mainline DC canon. However, one solution could be to mix a blend of classic versions of DC characters with those from the Absolute Universe.

Joker’s identity is completely different in the Absolute Universe, as well. In this world, the Joker is a mysterious billionaire who is also a serial killer.

Marvel Rivals Could Bring DC Out of Its Gaming Slump

Right now, there’s no telling what lies in store for the future of DC video games. Between rumors of another Arkham game in the works and the growing hope that Injustice 3 gets made, many fans of the comic book brand are eager for a strong offering that could have the same level of success as recent Marvel games.

As James Gunn’s DC cinematic universe is on the verge of kickstarting with Superman, only time will tell if there is new demand for a fresh game based around DC heroes. If DC looks to Marvel Rivals for inspiration, it might be playing it safe, but subverting expectations with its character roster and embracing the Absolute Universe could be the best way to set it apart.
