The Call of Duty franchise is one of the most popular first-person military shooters around, and it may finally be coming to the Switch and Switch 2, according to an industry insider. While the series has continued to have a prominent presence on platforms like PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, it hasn’t had the same presence on Nintendo consoles, but with this new report, Call of Duty could finally see its deal with Nintendo through.
Back in 2023, Nintendo and Microsoft signed a deal that would include Call of Duty on Switch, but that agreement has yet to come to fruition, as two years have passed without any franchise entries becoming available on the console. Bringing Call of Duty to the Switch isn’t as simple as it sounds, either. The long-running Nintendo console has hardware limitations, and now with the Switch 2 part of the equation, there are two consoles to account for. Call of Duty hasn’t been completely absent from Nintendo’s past roster, but when it comes to the Switch, it’s been a long waiting game. However, that wait might finally be over soon.
Call of Duty Didn’t Lose Its Identity With Black Ops 7—It Lost It 12 Years Ago
While Black Ops 7 has been criticized for lacking the Call of Duty identity, the series’ vibe actually shifted over a decade ago.
Call of Duty Could Finally Be Coming to the Switch Next Year
According to journalist Jez Corden via Twitter, the Switch’s first Call of Duty game is “nearly done,” and could arrive as soon as the next few months. Of course, that’s an incredibly vague timeline, but if Corden’s predictions are accurate, then it would finally mark the end to years of waiting. While Corden has a lot of experience reporting on rumors and leaks, like correctly predicting Doom: The Dark Ages would be a day-one PS5 launch, it’s still important to remember that any discussion about the Switch’s Call of Duty port should be met with skepticism until officially confirmed by Nintendo or Activision. Even though Corden claimed that the Switch would be getting its first Call of Duty game soon, he also made sure to temper fans’ expectations, emphasizing that while it’s nearly done, the game isn’t “close,” but he still insisted on a 2026 release date.
While he stated his belief that Call of Duty would come to the Switch sometime in 2026, he didn’t give an estimated timeline. Also, he refrained from stating if this upcoming Call of Duty game would be a brand-new offering for the Switch or a port for an existing entry. While a fresh entry would be a big surprise, it’s more likely that recent releases like Black Ops 6 or Black Ops 7 will be the games coming to the players. With the Switch 2 being more powerful than its predecessor, it will be interesting to see if the mysterious Call of Duty game actually launches for both consoles or just the stronger one. It would make sense, considering the sheer file size of Call of Duty games, but it would also likely be controversial, since there are still Switch players who have yet to upgrade to the new iteration of the console.
The last Call of Duty game to be ported to a Nintendo console was Call of Duty: Ghosts back in 2013.
Right now, there’s no way to know for sure when Call of Duty is coming to the Switch, but the next few months will hopefully lift the veil on the game’s progress. If the Switch finally gets the military shooter, it will also be interesting to see if future Call of Duty games are able to launch day-one for Nintendo consoles instead of having to wait for ports. Until Nintendo or Activision make an official statement, Jez Corden’s words should be taken with a grain of salt, but it’s a compelling possibility. There hasn’t been a Call of Duty game available on a Nintendo platform in 12 years, and as the wait grows longer, there are many gamers who would like to see the franchise finally make its debut on the Switch and Switch 2.
