Many indie games are finding success as larger publishers and studios try to navigate a difficult market, but Titanium Court stands out as a particularly special and unique one. After a relatively quiet launch a month ago, it’s now sold over 25k copies.
Publisher Fellow Traveller – known for releasing indie darlings like Citizen Sleeper and 1000xResist – announced the success of AP Thomson’s latest game via social media, roughly three weeks after its launch. For bigger indies, 25k copies might not be a lot, but for Thomson’s off-beat and experimental title, it’s a huge win.
Game File’s 20th May post shed more light on Titanium Court’s success – limited to PC so far – and what it means for both designer AP Thomson and publisher Fellow Traveller. After winning the grand prize at the 28th annual IGF awards, it’s achieved its main objective according to AP Thomson: “25K is more than any of my previous releases have sold, so in that way it absolutely exceeded my expectations!”
In fact, Titanium Court might give him more than enough space to cook his next game in peace: “My goal with commercial releases has always been to sell enough to allow me to make my next game at my own pace, and Titanium Court’s success looks like it’s going to give me a significant amount of runway to that end.”
Fellow Traveller founder Chris Wright also told Game File’s Stephen Totilo they’re expecting Titanium Court to be “profitable enough for us over time to fund another 2-3 bets of a similar size”. Looking at the publisher’s recent winning streak, I’d recommend keeping tabs on what comes next.
