FromSoftware has officially kicked off Elden Ring: Nightreign‘s first major post-launch event with its new Everdark Sovereigns, and it has already proven that it will test even the most experienced players. The debut of the Everdark Sovereigns in Elden Ring Nightreign brings a rotating schedule of limited-time boss fights that see players fighting Elden Ring Nightreign‘s existing Nightlords with new mechanics, more aggressive pacing, and increased rewards. Beginning with Adel, Baron of the Night (Gaping Jaw), players can take on these variants for a chance at exclusive gear, provided they’ve already defeated the base version of each boss.
But while the first Everdark Sovereign is already live in Elden Ring Nightreign, there are still several more to come. These boss variants don’t just have bigger health pools or simply deal more damage either, as they’ve been designed to be as surprising as possible and aim to compromise any muscle memory players have previously relied on. However, by breaking down what Gaping Jaw does differently now, it might be possible to predict how future Sovereigns like Sentient Pest and Darkdrift Knight might evolve.

Elden Ring Nightreign may offer new ways to get around, but the absence of Torrent leaves a gap that traversal mechanics alone struggle to overcome.

Adel, Baron of the Night Reveals a New Boss Philosophy for Everdark Sovereigns
With the first Everdark Sovereign now tromping around Elden Ring Nightreign, that means some players have already tackled the boss and experienced its new mechanics firsthand. By and large, Adel, Baron of the Night as an Everdark Sovereign is an enhanced version of the original Gaping Jaw, one of Elden Ring Nightreign‘s easier bosses, but that doesn’t make it an easy fight by any means. Yes, both its health and its damage have been significantly increased, but that’s not even the half of it.
Firstly, the new Adel skips over Gaping Jaw’s original intro phase, beginning instead at what would normally be Phase 2 of the fight. With this, it introduces a new cyclone mechanic that warps the fight by forcing players to stay within its area or take heavy damage as punishment.

Adel also features new AoE abilities, including a lightning explosion, ground eruption near where the boss lands after slamming to the ground, and fast charge and spin combos with wide-reaching slams in Phase 3. Speaking of Phase 3, that’s entirely new to this fight as well. The original Gaping Jaw only had two phases, and with the new Adel now beginning at Phase 2 and eventually moving onto a third, it’s a far more challenging boss fight overall.
Every Future Everdark Sovereign Will Likely Follow a Similar Design
More than likely, Adel as Elden Ring Nightreign‘s first Everdark Sovereign is just a sign of what’s to come for the remaining bosses scheduled to be added in the future. In other words, players should expect larger health pools from these bosses and significantly increased damage output, but plenty of other unique mechanics as well.
Players receive Sovereign Sigils for each Everdark Sovereign kill to spend on exclusive relics, chalices, and gear.
Like the new Adel, future Everdark Sovereigns may skip their initial phase and then add a third phase to the mix. Tougher arena mechanics can also be expected, like new AoE skills, increased aggression from each boss in Elden Ring Nightreign, but also perhaps even new weaknesses that can be exploited. Thankfully, these fights won’t be for nothing, as players can earn valuable rewards, even for repeated victories.
