The Combo System in Gothic 1 Remake is a complex and troublesome series of mechanics that are a bit difficult to discover on your own during your first playthrough. Learning the chain windows of each weapon to execute deadly combos will absolutely change the way you deal melee damage, but without proper training, the Nameless Hero cannot even swat flies with a stick.
Besides parrying, dodging, and blocking, players can increase their weapon performance and unlock deadlier attacks when they learn the proper skills. So, first we need to talk about mastering weapon skills, which are key to performing combos and finishers in Gothic 1 Remake.
Gothic 1 Remake: How to Get Your First Weapon
A free weapon with enough power to slay early-game enemies will significantly speed up your progression in Gothic 1 Remake.
The Basics Of Combos in Gothic 1 Remake
To use Combos in Gothic 1 Remake, players will need to understand that wielding a weapon and mastering it are two different things. Players start the game as simple prisoners who don’t know how to swing a stick, then, with proper training, their attacks become sharper, stronger, and finally, they learn how to combo those attacks.
To unlock Combos, players will need to train their Weapon Skills with any of the trainers available in the Colony. Players can find trainers in the following locations:
- Old Camp: Scatty, near the Arena, teaches up to Master Skill in One-Handed Weapons
- Old Camp: Thorus, at the Fortress Gate, teaches up to Master Skill in Two-Handed Weapons
- New Camp:Cord, in the training area, following the path to the left of the tavern. Teaches One-Handed Weapon Skills.
- New Camp: Lee, at the Mercenary Headquarters, teaches up to Master Skill in Two-Handed Weapons
- Swamp Camp: Gor Na Toth, at the training grounds. Will teach you up to Master Skill in One-Handed Weapons
- Swamp Camp: Cor Angar, at the training grounds. Master of Two-Handed Weapons.

Once players have unlocked the first Weapon Skill Tier (Trained) they will begin to notice the difference. Their swing speed will increase, and they will be allowed to perform simple combos and block enemy attacks. The parry and combo window will be more stretched, so the first Tier is only a slight improvement from swinging a club like a madman to a fairly proficient fighter.
The second Tier (Master) unlocks more combos, and adds finishers to them, which greatly increase the variety of attacks players can perform, and boost their combat capabilities by the heaps. Having the Master Skill means the difference between life and death in the late-game, so learning it is a must, unless you’re following the Ranged Attacker or Mage Builds.
Below, you can see a table with Each Weapon Skill, its cost, and its effect once you learn it:
|
One-Handed (Trained): costs 10 LP and 50 Ore. Improves swing speed and handling. Allows you to perform combos, critical strikes, and parries with one-handed weapons. |
|
One-Handed (Master): costs 20 LP and 200 Ore. Increases control, speed, adds critical strike chance, adds finishers to combos, knockback when attacking, and the ability to riposte after parrying with one-handed weapons. |
|
Two-Handed (Trained): costs 10 LP and 50 Ore. Improves Swing Speed, unlocks combos, critical strikes, and parries with one-handed weapons. |
|
Two-Handed (Master): costs 20 LP and 200 Ore. Boosts critical strike chance, adds finishers to combos, knockback when attacking, and the ability to riposte after parrying with one-handed weapons. |
How to Perform Combos & Finishers in Gothic 1 Remake
Combos are a series of 3 to 4 movements, and they can even add a finisher if an attack is timed correctly. To perform a combo, players need to observe and learn the “chain window” of every weapon in the game. Each weapon has its own swing animation speed and its own chain window to perform a combo.
Players can perform attacks with left click (Fast Attack), right click (Strong Attack), Q (low attack or stab), and E (high attack or slam).
Ideally, players will main only one type of weapon (it is highly recommended they do so), to fight more efficiently and to avoid silly mistakes like missing the chain window at the worst possible time. The fact that animation cancel exists in Gothic 1 Remake speaks volumes of how complex its combat system can be, so keep that in mind.

Here’s a rundown of every type of weapon in Gothic 1 Remake and their performance/combo chain window:
- One-Handed Swords: Easy to use, hard to master. They are fast, have moderate damage, but their combos are deadly. They are also the hardest to chain, but cause incredible effects like empowered criticals or can make the enemy fall to the ground.
- One-Handed Axes: Moderate handling and swing speed. They’re reliable and hit harder than swords, but their combos are a bit hard to land. Still, once mastered, it becomes deadly. It combines the best of the sword and maces.
- One-Handed Maces: Slow but powerful. Their lower attack can knockback foes at a great distance, and the slam attack (high attack) crushes their bones.
- Two-Handed Swords: Slow, but have lots of reach. Their combos are a bit easier to perform than those of other weapons, but are a bit complicated to use against large groups of enemies. Plus, they’re impossible to use in caves.
- Two-Handed Axes: Slow but powerful. Ideal to deal with strong enemies. Their combos are devastating but a bit harder to time properly.
- Staves/Spears: Their combos are complex and use wide-area attacks. Ideal to deal with groups of enemies or to keep them at bay. Less effective against larger foes like Trolls, Shadowbeasts, or Golems.
As mentioned before, timing is essential for combos. Each attack animation will allow players to chain another attack immediately, but there’s a catch: Swinging recklessly will tire the character, so pay attention to this and avoid spamming.
Here are some examples of One-Handed weapon combos:
- Heavy Attack + Fast Attack + Low Attack = Fast combo chain with stab finisher.
- Heavy Attack + Fast Attack + High Attack = Strong combo chain with a spinning jump finisher.
- Fast Attack + Fast Attack + Low Attack = Quick stab combo.
The secret to mastering combos is to practice and to find which weapons suit your playstyle the best.
