How to Start The Stranger in Gothic 1 Remake

The Stranger begins when you kill the Skeleton Mage deep beneath the Fog Tower, loot Chromanin 1 from its body, and read it. You can technically do this as soon as you are strong enough to clear the area, though it makes good sense to collect the book during Chapter 3, when you head to the Fog Tower to meet Diego at the end of The Water Mages’ Plan.

Before entering the Fog Tower basement, make sure you are equipped to deal with large groups of Skeletons and at least one Skeleton Mage. Bring plenty of healing items, good gear, and decently upgraded stats, or you may find yourself overwhelmed by enemies.

Chromanin 1 Location

To get Chromanin 1, enter the Fog Tower and descend into its underground chambers. Fight your way through the Skeletons until you reach a room with a Skeleton Mage, and defeat that enemy. Then, clear out any remaining Skeletons, loot Chromanin 1 from the mage’s body, and read it to start The Stranger.

The clue in this book reads: “The prudent fisherman knows not to cast his line, for there are no fish on the other side of the water.”

Your quest log says: “Seems like some kind of riddle? Something to do with the lake, maybe?”

Chromanin 2 Location

Chromanin 2 is on a table inside the building on the south side of the lake that is south of the New Camp. You’ll be familiar with this area if you’ve completed Up to His Neck, as it’s near the cave you visit when looking for Bran.

Chromanin 2 says: “The curious scholar seeks beyond the words of many, for they sit but idly in the mountainside.”

Your quest log updates with: “Could be pointing to a library – somewhere close to a mountain?”

Chromanin 3 Location

Chromanin 3 is in the Mountain Fortress, and it makes the most sense to grab it while working on The Focus at the Mountain Fortress during Chapter 3. After solving the bookshelf puzzle in that location, follow the path to the attic, drop down, turn around, and enter the room with the locked chest. The book is on a lectern next to that chest.

Chromanin 3 reads: “The bloodied warrior feeds from tormented bones, for a barrier may yet contain another.”

Your quest log then says: “Next could be a prison… or a dungeon.”

Chromanin 4 Location

Chromanin 4 is in the dungeon under the castle in the Old Camp. If you’ve already completed Bar the Truth, you’ll be quite familiar with this area.

To reach the book, pass Thorus and approach the entrance to the castle. Now go right and follow the path to the end. On your left, you’ll see a ladder leading down, and you should lockpick the door at the bottom. After the first door, go through the door on your left, pass through the metal gate in front of you, and then lockpick the gate on the right. Continue through the door on your right and follow the path downward until you reach a door that leads into a torture chamber. Chromanin 4 is on a table to the left just after entering.

Use this lockpick solver if you’re struggling with any of the doors on the way to Chromanin 4. If you’ve reached Chapter 4, the guards around the castle will be hostile, and the easiest way to deal with them is to run past them, descend the ladder, and kill the guards one at a time as they come down after you.

Chromanin 4 says: “The hardened guardian knows to tell remnants from ruins, for he need not ask for whom the bell tolls.”

Your quest log updates to: “In some sort of ruin? Something to do with a bell… and a guardian… of ruins?”

Chromanin 5 Location

Chromanin 5 is in the Old Citadel, making it a natural pickup during A Shaman Shunned in Chapter 4. Before setting out for this location, make sure you have a blunt weapon on hand, as you’ll encounter a Stone Golem near the book.

Head to the back of the ruins to find a bell perched on a ledge. Climb up to the bell and push it off the ledge to smash the metal grate below. Drop through the opening and follow the path until you reach the room with the Stone Golem. Chromanin 5 is on a small round table just left after entering that room, and you can collect it after you’ve dealt with the golem.

Chromanin 5 reads: “The patient seeker finds me where it all began.”

The quest log simply repeats that line, sending you back to the starting point.

Chromanin 6 Location

It’s now time to return to the Skeleton Mage room beneath the Fog Tower. The last time you were there, blue barriers blocked two of the doors in the room, but you’ll find that those barriers have now dissipated.

Enter the small room to the left of the stairs to find Chromanin 6 on a lectern. Read it to complete The Stranger and defeat the Skeletons that spawn.

The Stranger Reward

The real rewards for completing The Stranger are in a chest in the room across from the lectern room where Chromanin 6 is found. This room was previously blocked by a blue barrier, and the chest contains the following items:

  • Storm of Fire spell
  • Ring of Greater Invincibility
  • Inscription of Transform into Shadowbeast
  • 5x Parchment
  • Elixir of Magic Energy
  • Summon Skeleton scroll

The Ring of Greater Invincibility is particularly valuable, as it provides some very solid defensive stats. While you can buy that ring from Xardas, it’s quite expensive, so getting one for free through The Stranger makes the effort wortwhile.
