Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime fans can mark their calendars for June 29

It seems that it’s almost time for more ultraviolence and emotional devastation: we’ll be getting our first look at Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 on June 29.

The sequel to the 2023 anime was announced back in July 2025, and it will be a standalone story featuring a new cast of characters (mostly because of what happened to the old ones). It seems the upcoming teaser will introduce us to this new crew. Like the first season, the show is set in the same universe as CD Projekt’s Cyberpunk 2077. Here is Netflix’s initial description of the upcoming series:

It presents a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077— a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge.

When the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?

Thankfully, much of the first season’s staff are returning. The series will once again be animated by Studio Trigger, the studio behind the hot-blooded spectacle of Kill La Kill and New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. Edgerunners’ animation director, Kai Ikarashi, will take over director duties from studio founder Hiroyuki Imaishi. Writers Bartosz Sztybor and Masahiko Otsuka are returning as well, alongside Ichigo Kanno, who is taking over as the lead character designer.

In retrospect, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners played an essential role in the gradual revitalization of the previously maligned Cyberpunk 2077, as its story drew people back into this world and boosted game sales. Combining maximalist animation with affecting tragedy, the anime followed a gang of outlaws living at the outskirts of the dystopian Night City. It was well received by both critics and fans for its visuals, characterization, worldbuilding, and soundtrack.

Since then, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ characters have made their way into plenty of crossovers. The fighting game Guilty Gear Strive added Lucy as a guest character, while Wuthering Waves added her as well as Rebecca. The series also received an ongoing prequel manga series from Asano, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Madness, which is being published in paperback by Dark Horse.
