2009 Game Featuring Ozzy Osbourne is Free, But You Have to Act Fast

In honor of the late Ozzy Osbourne, Double Fine made the cult-classic game Brutal Legend free on Itch.io for 666 minutes. Originally released in 2009, Brutal Legend included NPC cameos from heavy metal musicians like Osbourne, and is considered one of Double Fine’s quirkiest releases for its use of gameplay mechanics from various game genres.

On July 22, John Michael “Ozzy” Osbourne died at age 76, two weeks after he reunited with Black Sabbath for a benefit concert, Back to the Beginning, in Birmingham, England. During his time with Black Sabbath and as a solo act, Osbourne was regarded as one of the greatest heavy metal musicians and vocalists of all time, with songs like “Crazy Train,” “Bark At The Moon,” “Iron Man,” and “Paranoid” becoming mainstays on the playlists of many fans. In his later years, Osbourne and his family were thrust into the spotlight with the MTV show The Osbournes. Osbourne was also featured in advertisements for games like World of Warcraft.

Double Fine confirmed on social media that Brutal Legend is free for 666 minutes, until 6:06 AM Eastern on July 24, on itch.io for Windows, macOS, and Linux users to claim. After logging in to or creating a free itch.io account, users can then download a 7.6 GB ZIP file containing Brutal Legend, without any digital rights management (DRM) attached. Brutal Legend features an NPC called The Guardian of Metal, with Osbourne providing the voice and likeness of the NPC, complete with tinted sunglasses, black clothes, and various jewelry. The Guardian of Metal helps Brutal Legend‘s main protagonist, Eddie Riggs, by offering upgrades to his Seperator axe and his Flying V guitar named Clementine. Brutal Legend is considered one of Double Fine’s strangest titles due to its blending of open-world adventure and real-time strategy gameplay, along with musical elements inspired by franchises like Guitar Hero.

As of this writing, Brutal Legend fans have just under nine hours remaining to add the 2009 Double Fine title to their itch.io collections. With Double Fine working on projects like Keeper, only time will tell what the studio’s plans are beyond 2025.
