A PS5 port of a Call of Duty game released in 2012 was recently the most-played title in the US on PlayStation Network, if you’re wondering how this summer of gaming releases is going.
Black Ops 2 really is just that good, I guess. But also, wow. Fortnite is routinely the top-played game in the US across both PlayStation and Xbox, but the recent port of BO2 has taken PSN by storm in America, according to data gathered by Circana.
I get it, because BO2 is easily my favorite CoD game of all time. But I can’t help but wonder how Activision feels seeing BO2 cannibalize the current game, Black Ops 7, along with Warzone and other recent games. The publisher is still making money, I suppose, but the hunger for classics is definitely there considering Black Ops 1 is also on the list, for the week ending July 18.
BO2 being this popular on PS5 is very interesting to me. Are there that many old-heads (like myself) who grew up on the game, or is this a whole new generation of younger players who never got to experience it at its peak? I’m willing to bet it’s a combination of both.
Fortnite remains king on Xbox for the same time period, along with Roblox, the Call of Duty HQ app, and Grand Theft Auto V. And so I can understand why publishers are all trying to capture that elusive live-service dragon, because the numbers are saying that’s what people are playing, and in droves.
But also, wow, this is bleak. Where are all the new games? Oh, there’s EA Sports College Football 27 coming in at number 10. Silly me. Listen, I know summer time is usually a drought for new releases, but this list is shocking.
I’m in a big gaming drought myself, so I’m looking forward to some big August releases like Beast of Reincarnation, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, and Star Wars: Zero Company. Or maybe I will join the rest of PS5 folks and hit up BO2 for some good, old-fashioned CoD.
