A Destiny fan has found a way to bring the game to PC as a fully playable release. The Destiny franchise has been one of the cornerstones of the games industry for a decade, but this year, Bungie announced the untimely death of Destiny 2. Fans were waiting for news regarding the unreleased Shattered Cycle expansion that was supposed to take place in Old Chicago, a location that has long been part of the series’ lore but never explored in either game. Now, much like the original game on consoles, Destiny 2 servers will stay online, but no new content will be released.
This is a sad fate for a franchise with hundreds of thousands of fans, generating well over one million players with the release of The Final Shape expansion for Destiny 2 across all platforms. The official Destiny 3 petition has gotten over 400,000 unique signatures since late May, but it’s hard to tell if this will have any impact on the franchise’s future and Bungie’s current plans. Now, a new release may finally shake things up for players, as Destiny may be coming to PC for the first time in ten years.
Destiny is Officially Getting a PC Port
A Destiny player by the name of Nick G shared a post on Twitter after the news that a Destiny 2 mod with a playable Leviathan Raid is being released, teasing that they are working on a PC port of the original game after 10 years of console exclusivity. The post included a screenshot of Destiny‘s character selection menu, and it was followed up by another post with details about what the port will include. Nick G stated that destinations are loading, and the port has functional character creation, inventory management, and quests. The project is in its early stages, but Nick G is confident that it will be completed. More screenshots showcase an inventory filled with Exotics, as well as the Quests tab of the menu, including The Taken King campaign.
Guns like the iconic Vex Mythoclast in Destiny are present in the port, and it seems that the project won’t be limited in scope. The currently in-progress mod for Destiny 2 that has the Leviathan Raid and more locations from the content vault is planned to be exploration-only, as enemies and NPCs, as well as in-game mechanics other than those of the playable characters, will not be included. If Nick G manages to get the port done, it will most likely be a monumental release for fans of the series, as a PC port of Destiny has been requested for years.
There is also the chance that Bungie’s next game, if there will be one, is going to be a Destiny PC port with modern features from Destiny 2, but this has not been confirmed. On top of that, in the insider reports that came with Destiny 2‘s death and layoffs at Bungie, it seems that the company doesn’t currently have games in active development.
It remains to be seen what happens next, as Destiny 2 has nearly 10 times the player numbers of Marathon, which was supposed to be Bungie’s focus for the foreseeable future. However, with 5,000 or fewer players on Steam, the game needs a major win to start its recovery. In the meantime, fans of Bungie’s decade-old series will have some new releases coming from fans to look forward to, and a Destiny PC port could be exactly what players need.
