From the very beginning of the One Piece franchise, Devil Fruits have been front and center as the primary aspect of the entire power system. In essence, these are special fruits that, upon being eaten, provide the user with unique abilities, which can range from being absolutely useless to powerful enough to destroy the world.
One commonality between every single Devil Fruit, regardless of its category, is the fact that seawater is their direct antithesis, which is why anyone who has ever eaten a Devil Fruit is unable to swim in the ocean. However, there are some Devil Fruits in One Piece that come with some strange side effects on top of this, so let’s take a look at what these are.

The Yami Yami no Mi Receives Double Damage
User: Blackbeard
Far and away, Blackbeard’s Darkness Logia is not only the strongest fruit of its category, but many fans make the case for it being the strongest Devil Fruit in the entire series. This is because of its many advantages, such as unlimited storage space, gravitational abilities, and, most importantly, its inherent ability to negate the Devil Fruit powers of others.
However, despite such apparent and overwhelming strength, the Yami Yami no Mi has one considerable downside, which is the fact that the user takes double the damage from an incoming attack. Despite being a Logia, it doesn’t give the user intangibility due to the gravitational properties of darkness, which also ends up making them receive double the damage.

The Kage Kage no Mi Can Be Taken Advantage Of
User: Gecko Moria
A Devil Fruit that many fans tend to forget about, the Kage Kage no Mi is actually quite powerful. This is because it gives the user the power to completely control and manipulate shadows, which proved to be an exceptionally strong ability during the events of the Thriller Bark arc, when Gecko Moria was able to bring Oars back to life or when he was powered up with Shadows Asgard.
However, despite its clear strength, if Moria is deprived of any shadows to manipulate at all, then the powers of the fruit are rendered completely useless, such as what happened when he was attacked by Doflamingo during the Marineford War. Aside from this, his minions aren’t completely under his control, as shadows can act independently, even to take Moria down.

The Beta Beta no Mi Turns The User Into A Disgusting Mess
User: Trebol
Trebol was one of the most annoying side characters ever introduced into the One Piece story and was the man who turned Doflamingo into the master criminal that he eventually became. With his Beta Beta no Mi Devil Fruit, Trebol was given the power to create limitless amounts of mucus that was strong enough to even hold a ship in place.
However, the major downside of this power can be seen with Trebol’s character design. Firstly, mucus powers are pretty disgusting on their own, but to top it all off, the Beta Beta no Mi turns Trebol into a slimy, grotesque slimeball whose entire clothing and appearance is made of mucus, which is why people tend to hate him so much.

The Sube Sube no Mi Is Difficult To Master
User: Alvida
The Sube Sube no Mi may be one of the most deceptively powerful Devil Fruits in the entire story. By making the user’s skin exceptionally smooth and slippery, all physical attacks simply gloss off their body, making this fruit very potent from a defensive standpoint. Plus, the user gains a skinny frame due to having all the fat slip off their body while maintaining their strength.
However, due to this same slipperiness, basic movement and mobility does become an issue, since Alvida was shown to wear special shoes to prevent sliding and slipping off the ground all the time. If the user’s shoes are off and they lose their footing, it’s almost impossible for them to regain it due to how unruly the slipperiness makes them.

The Hobi Hobi no Mi Grants Eternal Youth, At A Price
User: Sugar
The Hobi Hobi no Mi is easily one of the most underrated Devil Fruits in the story, and the strength of its abilities make it a top tier in the world. Essentially, with a single touch, Sugar can turn anyone into a toy, which then also erases all memories of that person within the minds of everyone who knew them, then followed up with a contract that forces them to work against their will.
Due to this incredible power, Sugar was seen as the most vital part of Doflamingo’s entire plan on Dressrosa. However, one notable side effect is that the user is permanently stuck at the age they were when they ate the fruit, with Sugar taking the appearance of a little girl despite mentally and chronologically being a grown woman.

The Jake Jake no Mi Is Pretty Much Useless On Its Own
User: Kelly Funk
The infamous Jake Jake no Mi is often seen at the top of many worst Devil Fruit lists, and it’s pretty clear to see why. In essence, this is a Paramecia type that gives its user the ability to turn themselves into a jacket that can then be worn by anyone to be used as a proxy for the original user’s boxing prowess.
As such, the side effect that tends to place this as the worst Devil Fruit in One Piece is the fact that the person wearing the jacket is still in charge of where they move and what they do. Because of this, it adds virtually no benefit to the user if there is no one around to wear the jacket in the first place, so it’s essentially useless in a 1v1 situation.

The Hito Hito no Mi Is Described As Being Useless
User: Tony Tony Chopper
Chopper is one of the all-time best characters in the entire One Piece story, and, by the end of the series, will likely go down as the greatest doctor that the world has ever seen. Not only that, but all the strength that he has accumulated over the years is due to his own modifications of his Devil Fruit, such as the Rumble Balls.
With that being said, his Devil Fruit, the Hito Hito no Mi, is literally defined as being useless in almost any other situation. Due to being the Human-Human Zoan, it provides no value or change to a regular person if they eat it and only gives an animal baseline human intelligence. So, if a regular person were to eat it, they would lose their ability to go into the sea and gain nothing, making this the most useless Devil Fruit in One Piece.
