Perhaps the most famous of all anime masterminds, Sosuke Aizen is widely regarded as the smartest character in anime. And, seeing his actions, particularly his deception of the entire Soul Society, it’s tough to argue against it, since he managed to pull off a legendary deception by acting as an unsuspecting and good-natured captain.

Because of this, Aizen was able to get the better of characters who had been operating for centuries. Plus, the aspect of his intelligence that is most like Batman’s own is how he manipulated the investigation into himself, as this allowed him to be free of suspicion. Although Batman is undoubtedly superior in some respects, Aizen’s multi-layered plan spans decades, and ultimately marks him as the smarter of the two.

Throughout the series, L and Light are always at each other’s throats and the only way to get one over each other is through raw, analytical intelligence. Throughout the anime industry, L is most like Batman, and his Herculean task of finding out Kira’s identity harkens back to some of the greatest detective media of all time, and the fact that he succeeded in narrowing it down to Light shows both of them as the most intelligent anime characters of them all.
