Baldur’s Gate 3 has 10 possible companions across three acts, but there are also important NPCs who hang out at the party camp. Some of these NPCs are important to Baldur’s Gate 3‘s plot, are close to certain companions, or are simply headed the same way and need a safe place to camp.
This tier list is arranged based on the characters’ likelihood of appearing in a playthrough, their role in the story, and the overall likability of the character.

S-Tier: Baldur’s Gate 3 Characters Who Change Camp For the Better
- Withers
- Aylin
- Sceleritas Fel
- Scratch
- Owlbear Cub
Withers is at the top of the list thanks to his role in Baldur’s Gate 3‘s plot, his snarky personality, his lore, and his sheer usefulness in providing a wide range of incredibly helpful services. As camp grandpa, Withers is a player favorite and has a particularly badass role in the Dark Urge’s storyline.
Aylin plays a central role in Act 2, and her role is set up as early as the beginning of Act 1 with the search for the Nightsong. Her possible release is one of the most poignant moments of the game, and she’s one of the most powerful allies in both Act 2 and Act 3. Aylin also plays a central role in Shadowheart’s personal arc.
Sceleritas Fel only appears in the Dark Urge playthroughs, and only becomes a camp visitor if the Dark Urge embraces Bhaal. While other NPCs give insight into other companion backstories and personal quests, Sceleritas is there specifically for the player. With the amount of insight Sceleritas gives the Dark Urge about their history, he’s an incredibly helpful NPC.
Scratch and the Owlbear Cub can both be acquired in Act 1, where they become the best of friends in camp. They can be spoken to with the Speak with Animals spell. Scratch will eventually give the player character a ball that they can use to summon him outside of camp, while the Owlbear Cub can assist in the final battle in Act 3. Aside from this, they’re both adorable and make camp a far more cheerful place.
A-Tier: Baldur’s Gate 3 Camp Visitors Who Make an Impact
- Alfira
- Isobel
- Volo
- Oathbreaker Knight
Alfira is a cheerful tiefling bard who won fans over with her sunny nature. She plays a minor role for custom characters in Act 2, where she gives a significant reward for rescuing the tiefling prisoners from Moonrise Towers, but notably is only a camp NPC for the Dark Urge. Her brutal end at the hands of the Dark Urge and the impact she has on their storyline places her in A-Tier.
Isobel plays a major role in Act 2, and joins the camp alongside Aylin in Act 3. While keeping her alive in Act 2 can be frustrating, her role in the story, her assistance in the final battle in Act 3, and her place in camp places her in A-Tier.
Volo is something of a Dungeons and Dragons legend, and his role in Baldur’s Gate 3 is loyal to his appearances in the TTRPG. His attempts to remove the tadpole end in disaster, and he spends most of his time needing to be rescued, but he serves his role as comic relief admirably.
The Oathbreaker Knight only appears for Paladin players who break their oaths. He’s grim, foreboding, and yet oddly reassuring in guiding a Paladin on their new path. He also has unique dialogue for the Dark Urge, offering insight into their forgotten memories.
B-Tier: Memorable Baldur’s Gate 3 NPCs on Their Own Path
- Arabella
- Thaniel
- Mizora
- Barcus
Arabella sees a lot of growth throughout Baldur’s Gate 3. Her unexpected relationship with Withers is heartwarming and, unlike the other tiefling refugee children, she has a complete story arc.
Barcus is a recurring NPC who can join the camp in Act 2. He plays a major role in the Ironhand Gnomes storyline, where he provides a counter perspective to Wulbren.
Thaniel is a nature spirit who plays a vital role in breaking the shadow curse in Act 2. Finding him is an involved process that involves the Shadow Fell, guarding a portal, and reuniting him with his other half. Once whole again, he can be found in the camp.
Mizora is the cambion who Wyll made a pact with and joins the camp in Act 3 whether Wyll chooses to keep or end it. While Mizora is useful in the final battle, she can be incredibly annoying in camp. Most egregious is that Mizora propositions the player character, which could ruin their romance if accepted.

C-Tier: Baldur’s Gate 3 Camp NPCs Who Appear For a Short Time
- Ulder Ravengard
- Arnell and Emmeline Hallowleaf
- Yenna
- Tara
Wyll’s father and the Grand Duke of Baldur’s Gate, Ulder Ravengard appears in camp in Act 3 if rescued from the Iron Throne. He directs the party to Ansur when he joins the camp.
If Shadowheart chooses to save her parents—Arnell and Emmeline Hallowleaf—they will appear in camp where they’ll give insight into Shadowheart’s past life.
Yenna is a girl who is encountered immediately after entering Rivington in Act 3, and will always join the camp alongside her cat, Grub. If she’s not kidnapped by Orin, she’ll sell the player character soup.
Tara is a tressym who only joins the camp if the player selects Gale as the player character. Sassy, helpful, and kind, she nonetheless only really plays a part in Gale’s character arc.
D-Tier: The NPC Very Few Baldur’s Gate 3 Players Meet
Rarely encountered by players, Quil is a failsafe for the Dark Urge players who go out of their way to save Alfira by knocking her out before she attempts to join the party. In this case, Quil Grootslang, a bard dragonborn, joins instead. Quil lasts in camp just as long as Alfira.
