An often frustrating part of Diablo 4‘s endgame is farming for the Obducite needed to finish Masterworking the gear for a particular build. With how necessary Masterworking is for players looking to take their build as far as possible into Diablo 4‘s endgame, Obducite becomes a very hot commodity the further players progress in the season. While there are several places to find Obducite in Diablo 4, Season 9 has introduced potentially the best possible route for farming Obducite the game has seen to date.
What makes Masterworking in Diablo 4 a potentially resource-consuming endeavor is the possibility of needing to reset a piece of gear’s Masterworks to optimize the affixes that get improved. Doing so may require Diablo 4 players to waste a lot more Obducite than they’d like, meaning going back to farm for more Obducite will likely be a recurring activity for players late in Diablo 4‘s endgame. Luckily, Season 9’s Escalating Nightmares offer the chance to kill multiple birds with one stone, since they are by far the best source of Obducite while offering other important resources and gear for players putting together their optimal build.

Escalating Nightmares Are the Ideal Source of Obducite
In seasons past, Diablo 4‘s Nightmare Dungeons tended to be the best place to farm Obducite. While Obducite can be obtained from places like Infernal Hordes or using a Tribute of Refinement in the Kurast Undercity dungeon, Nightmare Dungeons were the most consistent and accessible source for the material. However, Diablo 4 Season 9 essentially took the ideal Nightmare Dungeon farming route for Obducite and tripled down on it with Escalating Nightmares.
Escalating Nightmares pit players against three Nightmare Dungeons in a row, with each affix from the previous dungeon carrying over to the next one. Running one Nightmare Dungeon provides a solid enough amount of Obducite on its own, but the increasing rewards from running three back-to-back Nightmare Dungeons in Escalating Nightmares exponentially increase the amount of Obducite players can earn. Players can even target specific affixes on these Escalating Nightmares to try and optimize the Obducite gained from a single run.
For the best rewards Escalating Nightmares have to offer, players will need to defeat Astaroth after completing three dungeons. Although the boss is one of the toughest in Diablo 4, defeating him will help maximize the Obducite earned from a single Escalating Nightmares run.
The Best Escalating Nightmare Affixes for Obducite Farming
- Obducite Mine
- Horadric Strongroom
Two Escalating Nightmares affixes should be on the radar of players looking to earn the maximum amount of Obducite possible. The first desirable affix is Obducite Mine, which, as the name implies, increases the amount of Obducite players will find in that Nightmare Dungeon. Aside from Obducite Mine, Horadric Strongrooms can be a surprisingly effective way of farming Obducite simply due to the higher monster density, specifically the higher number of Elite spawns, since they are the primary source of Obducite drops in Nightmare Dungeons.
Since Horadric Strongrooms are such a great source of Obducite drops, an alternative for players without the optimal Escalation Sigils to farm an Escalating Nightmares run is to start a standard Nightmare Dungeon with the Horadric Strongroom affix, complete the Strongroom, and then simply leave the dungeon. Repeating this process until the desired amount of Obducite is obtained can be a decent way to farm the material for players who may be struggling to beat Astaroth. However, the other potential rewards that can be earned from clearing an Escalating Nightmare and defeating Astaroth still make this route the preferable option for players with builds strong enough to take out the boss.
