The idea behind Humankind is a funny one, in that it pulls from real-world history to essentially let you craft historical fanfiction. I suppose that’s true of many strategy games, but this one’s all about mixing and matching different cultures throughout history. And now, it’s asking you to do so all over again, as a sequel in the works. Zero points for guessing what it’s called, because it’s very plainly titled Humankind 2.
You shouldn’t expect all that much from the trailer, as it spends a full minute jumping from live action scene to live action scene throughout history, all from the POV of a baby that’s just been born. Kinda freaky! Particularly the bits where you’re being carried away from a tsunami and witnessing a bomb being dropped. The worst bit might actually be the one where you’re born in space. Just think of the damage it would do to your spine.

There was a blink and you’ll miss it amount of gameplay shown off at the end of the trailer, the fine details of which might mean more to people that have played the first game. Certainly looks snazzier and shinier, but it’s info light, so let’s look to the Steam page for more. Ah, it’s a touch vague again, but there is a promise of “exciting new progression systems, enhanced visuals, a modernized UI, and a host of general gameplay improvements that have been guided by extensive player feedback and studio experience.”
Apparently there will be more bits of history and culture to imbricate into what was already there, with the Saqqaq, Etruscans and Scythians being provided as examples, alongside “many more.” The Steam page also makes mention of the world being shaped by “powerful climate changes that transform the strategic map across the ages. Adapt your cities and economy to shifting biomes, protect vital resources, and weigh short-term growth against consequences that could span generations.”
There’s no release date attached to Humankind 2 just yet outside of a 2027 release, but a blog post does say that you’ll be able to play it in some shape or form to offer your feedback ahead of launch. More details can be expected in the coming weeks too apparently!
