I’m not a fan of The Legend of Zelda franchise. There. I said it.
Oh, my God. I’m breathing. I’m still here. I finally got it off my chest. I don’t like the Zelda games. I guess I kind of enjoyed Ocarina of Time as a kid in the 90s, but ever since then, I cannot be bothered to try the rest. This is my truth, and I am speaking it to power.
I’ve played most other big Nintendo franchises and enjoyed them. I like many of the Mario, Kirby, and Donkey Kong games, and I especially enjoy Metroid. But when it comes to Zelda, I simply can’t be bothered. I don’t like the combat, and I’ve never really cared for the story, whatever it may be at this point in time. Apparently, there are different timelines, and it’s controversial as to what happened somewhere, and what’s canon and what isn’t. It’s confusing to an outsider.
I dabbled a lot more in the classic titles like OOT and A Link to the Past, but even now, when I watch gameplay footage of Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom, all I see is another massive open-world checklist that is too daunting to even begin. Regardless of how many people lauded the game and praised it as the greatest thing ever made, I just can’t help but shrug my shoulders and say “meh.”
This may be sacrilegious to say, I know. But I’ve said it. And so it got me thinking that I can’t be the only one with a heinous hot take such as this. I also know I’m not the only one who does not care for Zelda, but it seems as though it’s one of gaming’s most popular and beloved franchises, so disliking it or not being a fan is also potentially quite rare.
I’m not trying to be a “pick me” or different in any way. I am just genuinely curious to see and hear what others’ opinions are about games, because I’ve felt this way about Zelda for a long time and haven’t really spoken out about it until now.
Some people hate Final Fantasy, or Metal Gear Solid, or Resident Evil, which are three of my top series ever. And that’s okay. We all have our likes and dislikes and tastes when it comes to gaming, although some opinions may widen eyes more than others.

And so now, I ask you, dear reader: what is your most controversial unpopular opinion? What’s your big hot take about a popular franchise? Let us know in the comments below. I will be reading and discussing, and potentially defending myself down there.
