Sony Pictures is reportedly in talks with Netflix to develop a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, the animated musical action film that became one of Netflix’s biggest hits. The update comes via The Hollywood Reporter.
Director Maggie Kang has previously hinted that the story could continue. Speaking to Screen Rant, she said, “There are always side stories, and there are things we’ve thought of while making this one. There are a lot of questions that are answered, but not fully. I think there are a lot of pockets that we can explore.”
As of now, neither Netflix nor Sony has made an official announcement about the sequel.
The track Golden, performed by the fictional girl group Huntr/x recently hit No. 1 on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts. Netflix has also submitted the song for Academy Award consideration.
In an interview with Variety, Audrey Nuna, who voices Mira in the film, said, “I feel like now I just have to go for the EGOT at this point.” She added that the possibility of an Oscar nomination feels “surreal” as it would come before any Grammy nods.
KPop Demon Hunters, released in June, follows Huntr/x — Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. A K-pop girl group who balance their careers as pop stars while secretly fighting demons. The plot takes turn when they know that their rivals, the Saja Boys, are demons themselves. The film stars Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo, with music by producer Teddy and K-pop group Twice.
KPop Demon Hunters is currently streaming worldwide on Netflix.
