The PS5 launched in the darkest year in recent memory, 2020, and has since gone on to become a successful console. Genres of all types are now available from open-world games to RPGs to shooters and beyond. While players are guaranteed to find magic in RPGs, the concept is not exclusive to fantasy.
There are sci-fi games with magic too, along with stories that feature magic but don’t incorporate it into combat. So, let’s take a look at some magic-filled PS5 games to see which ones are the most wondrous. These games will be ranked on how creatively magic is incorporated into their worlds and whether they can help players forget their troubles or not.
Elden Ring
A Dark World Of Mystery
Most of FromSoftware’s Soulslike games have a bit of magic in them, even though their worlds are bleak, and Elden Ring is not an exception. The game is bigger than its spiritual predecessors, as it is an open-world, and there are more weapons and spells to find and learn than in any other Soulslike.
Magic can give players a huge advantage in battle, from supportive skills to light-based attacks. Summoning fiends or humanoids to aid in battle is also magic-related, and plenty of great recommended builds can turn players into a powerful mage.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Final French-tasy
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 takes place in a fantasy world inspired by 19th-century France, on the edge of destruction, with characters trying to rid the world of an evil entity known as The Paintress. Each party member in this turn-based RPG has some sort of magical ability or affinity, which can be unlocked with a skill tree.
For example, Lune is the elemental mage of the group who can cast magic like fire and ice spells, while Sciel mainly focuses on dark-based magic. As another example, Maelle is not a magician, but her abilities typically have fire-related attacks to them that can cause Burn and damage enemies on their turn.
Diablo 4
Fight Back Against Hell
Like all Diablo games, players can create their character and choose a class in Diablo 4. When the game launched, players could create three dedicated magical classes, a Druid, Necromancer, or Sorcerer, then gain new skills and spells as they leveled up.
The classic magical class was the Sorcerer, and it could be quite thrilling to dominate a battlefield alone or with friends using spells. Diablo 4 was the first game in the series to let players explore an open world, albeit from a top-down perspective, which added more depth to the dark fantasy setting.
In The Name Of The True King
Metaphor: ReFantazio is the first new series that the Persona team at Atlus has created in quite some time. Instead of a world based on reality, like Persona or Shin Megami Tensei, Metaphor: ReFantazio is a full-on fantasy world that feels lived-in, complete with different races, from faeries to elf-like humanoids.
The game features a class system centered around Archetypes, which every character can equip to gain weapon-based skills or magical abilities. Abilities can be unlocked through skill trees, and Archetypes evolve to become more powerful, expanding the game’s magical elements until they become devastatingly powerful.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
My Kingdom For A Piece Of Materia
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the second part of the remake trilogy that Square Enix plans to release based on Final Fantasy 7. Unlike the first entry, players are thrown into an open world to explore at their leisure, albeit gated by story progress. Even though the game reflects modern society with cellphones and cars, magic remains a prominent feature that organizations want to harness and exploit.
Like the original game, players can find or purchase magical crystals called Materia that grant characters magical abilities, such as summoning lightning out of thin air. Players can strategically combine Materia to create devastating builds, resulting in one of the best magic systems in the series.
Baldur’s Gate 3
A Well-Established Gaming World, Perfected
Baldur’s Gate 3 is based on the Dungeons & Dragons license, so it goes without saying that the game has magic in it. Half of the RPGs that are still around today are based on D&D’s magic, class, and combat systems, like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, and while Baldur’s Gate 3 joins that pack, it also rises above it.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has a well-established world featuring various races and party members that fall into traditional RPG classes. It’s a world based on ancient magic that is both mysterious to explore and fun to use. That said, it’s not as flashy as some other modern RPGs, but magic is indeed effective in battle, and can be used as an exploration tool as well.
Hogwarts Legacy
Every Kid’s Fantasy
D&D may be old-school, but the world of Harry Potter focuses purely on magic. Hogwarts Legacy was the first standalone game based on the license, and it let players create their own witch or wizard to attend the iconic magic school, Hogwarts.
They are sorted into houses, attend classes, and learn spells through the story, from levitating chairs to exploding enemies with a devastating force strike. Magic is easy to use, but the best part is being able to explore Hogwarts and its surrounding grounds, as it was a dream come true for Harry Potter fans who have been wishing magic was real since 1997.
