My Hero Academia: Horikoshi Officially Reveals Why He Made Izuku and Ochaco A Couple

This article contains spoilers from Kohei Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia.

My Hero Academia ended last year, but the fans consider themselves blessed as the author of the series, Kohei Horikoshi, has consistently been releasing new bits of content every now and then. Kohei Horikoshi has already revealed some fascinating pieces of information to the fans, but the one that fans consider to be the most valuable is, undoubtedly, the relationship between Izuku Midoriya and Ochaco Uraraka.

At the end of My Hero Academia, specifically in the epilogue chapter, Izuku Midoriya and Ochaco Uraraka moved their relationship forward, thanks to Horikoshi finally deciding to do all their fans justice. Now, Horikoshi has explained his thought process behind the couple of Izuku Midoriya and Ochaco and what he tried to convey with their special moment in My Hero Academia Chapter 431.

Horikoshi Depicts Something Greater Than Romance Between Izuku And Ochaco

Horikoshi Didn’t Want To Neglect Romance

  • Izuku and Ochaco were destined to end up together
  • MHA epilogue chapter finally got the two together

When My Hero Academia ended, fans were largely disappointed with Horikoshi not building anything major in the romance department of the series. After all, fans of My Hero Academia love romance and this is one aspect of the story that Horikoshi often neglected on purpose. According to Horikoshi, he wasn’t sure how to find the right balance between romance and the “save the world” aspect of things, and his solution was to drop an epilogue chapter to fix things up.

This way, he was able to finally deliver on the Izuku and Ochaco Uraraka couple. After having drifted apart for years, the two met again and finally started a relationship at the end of MHA chapter 431. This marked the beginning of a beautiful relationship, and something that fans will treasure for years to come. Here’s why Horikoshi decided to make Izuku and Ochaco an official couple at the end of My Hero Academia:

Question: Chapter 431 focuses on Deku and Ochako. In My Hero Academia, there wasn’t much focus on romance, was there any reason for that?

Horikoshi: Instead of wanting to portray romance in the story, I just wanted to show the contrast between Ochako and Toga with their views on love. Since romance is a very strong stimulus, as soon as you include it in the story, that’s all anyone is going to talk about, so I deliberately avoided adding it to the story.

However, since the setting of the series is at school after all, it would be rather dishonest to completely ignore romance, so it was pretty hard to think of a balance. Thankfully, since Deku was always doing other things, he was unaware of any romantic feelings, and it turned out to be a good thing for me [since Horikoshi didn’t want to include romance in the main plot].

However, when Chapter 394 came around, the topics [discussed by Toga and Ochako] did touch upon that stimulus called love, so I knew that it would be strange not to follow up on that point later in the story, which is why I chose to write about it. I never thought that romance would go well with the theme of the story of My Hero Academia, which is “to save and be saved,” nor would it make sense to include it in “the story of how we all became Heroes.” So that’s why I decided to touch upon it in an epilogue, like a postscript of sorts.

However, rather than depicting romance itself, I wanted to depict love in a form as part of something even greater, but I wonder how it turned out?
