GTA 6 Officially Confirms How Jason and Lucia’s Relationship Works

GTA 6 puts the relationship between Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos at the heart of the core story, although how it shakes out and if it even becomes romantic is ultimately up to the player. Rockstar has established that the pair have a complicated history and rely heavily on each other throughout the game, making their dynamic an important part of GTA 6‘s story. At the same time, players aren’t necessarily going to experience that relationship in exactly the same way, with GTA 6 giving them some control over how close Jason and Lucia become.

The good news, too, is that the relationship is meant to feel more natural than “measured,” as often happens in video game romances. Past Grand Theft Auto games featured traditional dating mechanics that were very rigorous in application and approach. GTA 6 appears to be taking a less structured approach, with Jason and Lucia’s relationship being something that develops through the broader gameplay experience instead of feeling like a separate progression system.

GTA 6 Romance: Partners-In-Crime to Something More?

In GTA 6, Jason and Lucia’s relationship is represented through different states rather than a visible romance meter, as reported by Vice. There isn’t a traditional bar for players to fill up, and dates don’t operate through the same fixed system seen in GTA: San Andreas and GTA 4. Instead, GTA 6 lets players essentially create their own dates by choosing activities for Jason and Lucia to do together. Going to the zoo, kayaking, walking along the beach, or simply finding something else to do together can all become opportunities for the two characters to spend time with each other.

That also means some dates in GTA 6 can emerge naturally from what players are already doing. For example, visiting the gym with Jason or Lucia can turn into an impromptu date, with the other character exercising alongside the player. Jason and Lucia can also text each other, say goodnight, hold hands, and walk with their arms linked, giving GTA 6 plenty of smaller interactions that establish how the two characters feel about each other without relying on a traditional romance meter.

Most importantly, GTA 6 ultimately leaves the direction of Jason and Lucia’s relationship up to the player. They can be treated primarily as partners in crime, or players can lean into the romantic side of their relationship as they spend more time together. The open-world crime game isn’t forcing every player to experience Jason and Lucia’s relationship in precisely the same way, which gives their dynamic considerably more flexibility than a straightforward dating progression system would.

GTA 6 also seems intent on keeping that flexibility from becoming an unnecessary source of player-made friction. Jason and Lucia aren’t going to constantly become jealous of one another over the player’s actions, meaning things like visiting a strip club in GTA 6 won’t suddenly create relationship drama. They aren’t going to suddenly switch up on players if they develop different Criminal Profiles for the characters in GTA 6. That allows GTA 6 to make Jason and Lucia’s relationship feel meaningful without turning it into another system players have to carefully manage, leaving the focus on how the two characters naturally interact throughout the game.
