Jujutsu Kaisen Officially Unveils The New Gojo

Introduced officially in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 2, on March 12, 2018, in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 15, Gojo Satoru is the face of the entire franchise established by Gege Akutami and also one of the strongest characters to ever exist in the universe. Gojo went on a remarkable run in the story, but his time officially came to an end in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 236, which was released on September 25, 2023, in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #43. Since then, Gojo’s absence has been felt tremendously by the fans, but in the new era, 68 years after the conclusion of the original story, Japan has now revealed the new Gojo Satoru. This person is none other than Yuji Itadori.

In the modern era of sorcery, Gojo Satoru stood as the absolute strongest, and there is no denying that fact. Gojo was born into one of the Three Big Families in the world of JJK, and through it, he gained access to the powers of the inherited cursed technique known as the Limitless. Gojo was also born with the cursed trait known as the Six Eyes. It is incredibly rare for any member of the Gojo family to be born with both of these powers at once. In fact, the last person to wield both the Limitless and the Six Eyes at the same time was born 400 years before Gojo Satoru, and that just goes to show how rare his powers truly were.

That, when coupled with the fact that Gojo was a born genius, meant that he was already destined to become incredibly powerful. Gojo trained relentlessly over the years and fully mastered the powers of the Limitless, which turned him into the strongest modern sorcerer. His status as the strongest was confirmed in the story on various occasions, such as when he fought and defeated Toji Fushiguro and evolved his usage of the Limitless for the first time.

In the Shinjuku showdown arc, Gojo went against the strongest sorcerer in history, Ryomen Sukuna, and was able to match him in combat, blow for blow. Unfortunately, in the end, Gojo let his guard down, which the King of Curses used as an opportunity to defeat him for good. When Gojo Satoru fell in JJK chapter 236, fans were utterly distraught. Now, 68 years later in the universe of Jujutsu Kaisen, his legacy is officially being carried on by his student, Yuji Itadori, who also served as the protagonist of the original story.

“The reason he was cut down was also that he had let his guard down after destroying Mahoraga. By this point, Gojo thought Sukuna no longer had a way to bypass Limitless. Perhaps Gojo, under normal circumstances, would’ve been able to sense it and narrowly avoid fatality.” — Gege Akutami, JJK April 2025 Q&A

In Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 271, which was officially released on September 30, 2024, in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump issue 44, Gojo Satoru entrusted the future to Yuji. Most fans ended the story believing that Yuji continued his legacy. However, in JJK Modulo, which is a sequel story by Gege Akutami, 68 years after the conclusion of the series, it was confirmed to us that Yuji had failed to live up to the task. Yuji Itadori, despite being the strongest, disappeared completely and left Japan wide open to attacks. When the Simurians came, the search for Yuji began, but he was nowhere to be seen.

“Haven’t we had enough of Gojo Satoru already? Seek out a different kind of strength than mine. I expect great things from you, Yuji!” — Gojo Satoru to Yuji Itadori, Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter #271

Later down the line, in JJK Modulo chapter 25, which was officially released on March 9, 2026, in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 15, Gege Akutami confirmed to us that Yuji Itadori was done running away from his role. The primary reason why Yuji ran away was the fact that his aging had stopped, and he was unsure of how others around him would react to that. At the same time, Yuji was losing one friend after another, and this loss was too much for him to bear. This is primarily why he isolated himself from all his friends and sorcerer society in general, quitting his job of being a powerful sorcerer for Japan.

Yuji: I should’ve done this with my own power. But I won’t disregard my purpose any longer. There’s something I need to do. And to do that, I need your help, Kugisaki!

Nobara: Heh, alright then!

— Yuji takes up Gojo’s role, JJK Modulo Chapter #25

In the last chapter, Yuji finally found himself and decided to live up to the promise he made to his grandfather, Wasuke Itadori, and, at the same time, Gojo Satoru. As the new strongest, Yuji intends to now raise the next generation of sorcerers and equip them with all the tools they would need to fight any cursed spirit born in Tokyo in the future. Just as Gojo Satoru raised the next generation of sorcerers and changed the world, Yuji Itadori now intends to do the same. Given that he is finally doing what Gojo entrusted him to do, he has now officially established himself as the new Gojo of the next era of sorcerers. Yuji is already the strongest, just like Gojo, and his job now is the exact same as that of Satoru in the original series, making him the perfect successor to the original strongest.

Yuji’s Overall Strength Compared To Gojo Satoru

Jujutsu Kaisen Yuji Overall Strength Compared Gojo Satoru

When it comes to the strength of the two powerful sorcerers, Yuji and Gojo are incredibly close in terms of overall power level. However, it is likely that Yuji Itadori has surpassed Gojo in terms of overall strength. Yuji has access to two Cursed Techniques, those being Blood Manipulation and Shrine. At the same time, Yuji Itadori is also part human, part Cursed Spirit, which gives him a tremendous advantage when it comes to the usage of Reverse Cursed Technique. Furthermore, he has far more experience than Gojo overall right now. The most important fact is that Yuji can potentially hit Cursed Black Flashes at will, making him a devastatingly dangerous enemy for anyone to take on.

“Upon absorbing the Cursed Wombs, he became a hybrid between a curse and a human, which caused his aging to slow down to an extreme degree” — Gege Akutami explains Yuji’s transformation, Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo Volume #3 Notes

Yuji’s control over Shrine seems to be far more refined than even Ryomen Sukuna, and overall, he is an incredibly dangerous enemy for anyone to take on in combat. Just as Sukuna was able to defeat Gojo in Shinjuku, it is highly likely that Yuji Itadori can do the same. Despite that, we can say with absolute assurance that Yuji and Gojo belong in the same bracket, as they are both the strongest sorcerers of their own respective eras. It is going to be interesting to see how Yuji’s journey from here on unfolds, and hopefully Gege Akutami gives us a look at that later down the line.
