Keanu Reeves has spent decades proving himself as one of Hollywood’s most versatile leading men, moving effortlessly between the action-oriented John Wick franchise, the sci-fi-heavy The Matrix series, and several other dramatic roles. Most recently, Reeves has teamed up with Deadpool director Tim Miller for a new sci-fi adventure called Shiver, which is set to be released next summer. The plot follows Reeves’ smuggler whose job in the Caribbean goes horribly wrong, spiraling into a deadly nightmare involving relentless sharks, ruthless mercenaries, and a mysterious time loop.
Shiver takes the basic appeal of a deadly sea creature and juxtaposes it with a very unusual sci-fi survival premise. On the surface, it sounds like the shark of Jaws meets the time loop of Groundhog Day and Edge of Tomorrow, and there are actually plenty of similarities between Shiver and Steven Spielberg’s shark thriller. Keanu Reeves has proven to be a big box-office draw in recent years, so his upcoming sci-fi creature-feature could easily be 2027’s version of Jaws.
Keanu Reeves’ Shiver Feels Very Reminiscent of Jaws
The similarities between Keanu Reeves’ upcoming creature feature, Shiver, and Steven Spielberg’s 1975 masterpiece are impossible to ignore. Both films revolve around a giant shark turning a picturesque coastal setting into a terrifying fight for survival, although Shiver looks set to take that idea one step further. Widely credited with ushering in the era of summer blockbusters, Jaws released in June 1975, and Shiver will be following that blueprint by releasing on August 13, 2027. Jaws is set in the fictional beach community of Amity Island, where Sheriff Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) must track down the deadly great white shark that’s brutally attacking local beachgoers. The movie’s enormous success inspired a string of creature features in the decades following its release.
It’s difficult to imagine Keanu Reeves’ upcoming movie existing without Spielberg’s masterpiece. While the bloodthirsty ocean predator is the obvious villain in Jaws, there are plenty of other undesirables Sheriff Brody must contend with, including Amity Island’s Mayor Vaughn (Murray Hamilton), who wants to keep the beaches open with July 4th on the horizon so the small town can rely on its profitable tourism trade. According to plot details for Shiver, Reeves’ protagonist similarly must contend with plenty of human enemies, with mercenaries set to double-cross the smuggler and force him to fight for his survival both on land and at sea.
Shiver Has An Intriguing Premise
Keanu Reeves’ character in Shiver is simply known as ‘smuggler’, though as fans get closer to the movie’s release date, it’s possible the studio will reveal his character’s actual name. The plot sees the smuggler’s Caribbean-based job going disastrously wrong, leaving him caught between mercenaries, deadly sharks, and an intriguing time loop. While Sheriff Brody only had to contend with one terrifying great white in Jaws, Reeves’ character faces an additional sci-fi nightmare, which could make his fight for survival even more unpredictable. Time loops have long fascinated Hollywood, from the endlessly repeating day in Groundhog Day to the brutal cycle of death and resurrection in Tom Cruise’s coolest movie, Edge of Tomorrow.

The time loop could make Shiver’s sharks even more relentless than the iconic predator in Jaws. Basically, Keanu Reeves is going to need more than a bigger boat to battle the threat of the grisly sea creatures in his upcoming thriller. In Jaws, Brody teams up with shark hunter Quint (Robert Shaw) and marine biologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) to kill the creature and restore safety to Amity Island, but imagine if killing the shark simply sent them back to the beginning, forcing Brody and his team to face the same deadly predator all over again. Depending on how Shiver uses its time loop, Reeves’ character could find himself in precisely that situation, with every victory undone and every encounter offering another opportunity for the sharks to strike.
It’s an intriguing opportunity for Shiver to build on one of the elements that made Jaws so effective: the seemingly unstoppable nature of its central predator. Although Jaws spawned several sequels, none of the follow-ups could recapture the original film’s terrifying atmosphere or the impact of its great white shark. Spielberg famously had to work around a malfunctioning mechanical shark, ultimately making the creature’s limited appearance one of the movie’s greatest strengths. Shiver, meanwhile, could benefit from modern visual effects and the time-loop structure to make the same threat feel inescapable, even after the creature has apparently been defeated. If Keanu Reeves’ upcoming thriller proves successful, it could spawn a franchise that similarly reinvents creature feature horror as Jaws did 50 years ago.
