Discord users may want to keep an eye on their accounts due to a recent data breach involving the platform. Discord announced on October 3 that some users may have been impacted by an attack on one of its third-party customer service agencies but it is taking steps to address the issue.

Discord Update Makes Big Increase to Server Size

The Discord platform has evolved over the years from a gaming communication platform to one of the standards of social chat. In June, malicious links were passed around Discord that attempted to steal user data and installed malware on computers.

Discord Data Leaked in Customer Service Breach

One of Discord’s third-party customer service providers was the target of an attack on information collected by the Customer Support and/or Trust & Safety teams. The data that was involved includes real names, Discord usernames, emails, and other contact information that may have been provided to customer support. They also received access to limited billing information including payment type, the last four digits of users’ credit cards, and account purchase history.

All Data Involved in Customer Service Breach

  • Name, Discord username, email and other contact details if provided to Discord customer support
  • Limited billing information such as payment type, the last four digits of your credit card, and purchase history if associated with your account
  • IP addresses
  • Messages with our customer service agents
  • Limited corporate data (training materials, internal presentations)

In response to the breach, Discord has removed the third-party customer support provider’s access to the ticketing system and launched an internal investigation. Discord is advising users to stay alert to messages or other communications involving the Discord platform that may seem suspicious. Users who are impacted by the breach will receive an email from [email protected]. In April, Discord rolled out an age verification feature in the UK and Australia to make the platform safer for minors. Those who provided their government ID for this purpose will be specifically notified in the email from Discord.

Discord has been making a lot of changes to its platform in 2025, including a controversial UI change to the Discord desktop app. Other updates tried to improve some user security features, like the addition of the Ignore feature, allowing people to control who they talk to more than with just the block feature. The age verification feature was a less than welcomed addition to the platform, and now that some user data has been compromised, Discord may need to revisit how it handles age verification in the future to keep its users safe.
