Vinland Saga is one of the most famous works that fall under the seinen category, in the same league as the likes of Berserk or Vagabond. Originally, Vinland Saga was created by Makoto Yukimura and published in Weekly Shōnen Magazine starting in April 2005. The series would go on to run in it for years afterwards, and it was eventually switched to Monthly Afternoon Magazine the same year.
Vinland Saga had a long and successful serialization overall. The manga concluded with the final chapter recently, in July 2025, wrapping up over two decades of storylines and character arcs. The ending was well received by the millions of fans following this exciting story, but with the end of the manga, fans have turned their attention toward the next biggest project of the series: the TV anime. For context, Vinland Saga has had an interesting history when it comes to its TV anime. Its first anime season was originally released in 2019, well over a decade after its manga debut in 2005.
Back then, Vinland Saga was handled by Wit Studio. However, for its second installment, Vinland Saga Season 2, the production was switched over to MAPPA Studio. Its second season and latest installment started its run on January 9, 2023, and released its final episode on June 20, 2023. Vinland Saga’s Latest Season 2 Ended 3 Years Ago
Vinland Saga has taken over the hearts of anime fans all over the world. The story is quite unique, and its main character, Thorfinn, features some of the best character development seen in popular media. Its first anime season from 2019 was incredibly well received and showed us the beginnings of Thorfinn’s life, and his childhood with his family in Iceland. The story takes a tragic turn when Thorfinn’s father dies, and thus begins his quest for revenge. Vinland Saga Season 1 ended with the death of Askeladd and Thorfinn losing his sense of self.
Thorfinn’s story continued forward with the new adaptation by MAPPA Studio in 2023, which adapted the Farmland arc. Vinland Saga Season 2’s story progression was quite surprising for many fans, as it took a sharp turn away from the intense action and erased the cold personality of Thorfinn from the first season, and this change ended up being a breath of fresh air, serving as some of the best character development in modern anime.
While Vinland Saga Season 2 was incredibly well received in general, many fans still complained about the slower-paced plot. Ratings are still incredibly high, and it features some of the best-rated episodes of all time for any anime series. The end of Season 2 sets us on a new arc, with Thorfinn now set to head back home after a long time and return as a man. His quest for peace and prosperity after years of long suffering continues.
Vinland Saga Season 3’s Fate And Potential Release Date
We’re all extremely curious to know why Vinland Saga, a series so well-received and highly popular, hasn’t gotten a continuation yet. After all, with the creator Makoto Yukimura having concluded his story last year, it is the perfect opportunity to greenlight a third season and move forward to animate the rest of the manga to give fans a full adaptation of the story. Unfortunately, at the moment, we have no new information regarding why the TV anime has halted production. It might have to do with the Japanese anime studio handling the series, MAPPA.
For context, Vinland Saga’s first season was produced by WIT, which, back then, was a relatively small animation studio. Wit wasn’t able to immediately greenlight a second season before seeing how the first performed. At the same time, Wit Studio’s hands were already full, which is why the whole team that had worked on Vinland Saga at Wit Studio was instead transferred to MAPPA, where the second season was created. MAPPA has become one of the largest and most popular Japanese animation studios, and we can only assume that, at the moment, their hands are completely full as well.
MAPPA is currently undertaking some massive adaptations, which include Jujutsu Kaisen Season 4 for 2027. It is unclear when MAPPA will be able to continue work on Vinland Saga. With so many other popular series to work on, it seems Vinland Saga isn’t high on the priority list. It’s entirely possible that Vinland Saga will be transferred once more to a new studio to continue its adaptation.
For Vinland Saga Season 3, there is no hope of getting a new update anytime soon. Even if a new adaptation is greenlit today, it would still take, at the very least, a year or two for the final project to see the light of day. In other words, with no project currently announced, the wait is going to be long. There is no chance of getting a new installment for at least 3 more years, putting a massive gap between Vinland Saga Season 2 and Season 3. All we can do right now is wait.
