When you first take on the role of Atsu in Ghost of Yotei, the game can sometimes feel quite difficult. Like it’s predecessor – Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima – Yotei revels in forcing the player to take on several foes at once, which can be overwhelming early on. Luckily, there are several steps players can take to offset the game’s difficulty, which only grows as you play. In fact, if you know where to look, it is possible to boost Atsu’s strength incredibly fast. With this list, we’ll show players looking to break the game’s combat how to become overpowered early in Ghost of Yotei.
Players looking to get OP early in Ghost of Yotei will have several key areas they’ll want to focus on. First and foremost, players will want to locate the game’s best armor, and with two options that are available quite early, this will not be too much of a challenge. Next, players will want to unlock at least two weapons as quickly as possible. Finally, players will want to collect several important charms, along with the materials to upgrade their equipment. Once complete, Atsu will be nearly unstoppable.
It is important to note that you need not follow any specific order when collecting these items. We chose the armor to start with because it can provide the largest single-item benefits. However, if you wish to collect the weapons first, or even a specific charm, there is no need to worry. Since you’ll want to get every item on the list, feel free to collect them in any order. Every item on this list can be found in the first three regions of the game.
Wrap Yourself in Power – Best Early Armor in Ghost of Yotei
Unlock the Bounty Master and Undying Samurai Armor Sets:
Of all the items that Atsu will use to take on the Yotei Six, armor may be the most important. With this in mind, our first tip revolves around collecting one or both of the best sets of armor in Ghost of Yotei. Both sets can be acquired relatively quickly, and while the focus may be on the best early-game armor, the argument can be made that these are the best armor sets in the entire game.
Which armor set you go for will largely depend on your playstyle. If you feel confident in your ability to perform Perfect Parries and Perfect Dodges, then the Bounty Master Armor will be your best friend. This armor is for players who have no issue fighting aggressively.
If you struggle to get through large groups of enemies, or find yourself knocking on death’s door more than you’d like to, then the Armor of the Undying will be your best choice.
How to Get the Bounty Master Armor:
The Bounty Master Armor is one of the easiest armor sets to get in Ghost of Yotei. To acquire this set, you’ll simply need to complete all bounties in the Yotei Grasslands, Ghost of Yotei’s starting area.
You can find the bounty posters at the Yotei’s Shadow Inn Bounty Board. Once you’ve taken all the posters off the board and completed them, speak to Kojiro. He will give you a special bounty, which unlocks the armor set.
The Bounty Master Armor set features the following perks:
- Increases the window for Perfect Parries and Perfect Dodges, but regular parries are no longer available.
- A Perfect Parry enables a new follow-up counterattack. Fully upgraded, you’ll get three follow-up attacks, making this incredibly powerful.
- All types of spirit gains are increased by up to a massive amount (when fully upgraded).
How to Get the Armor of the Undying:
To get the Armor of the Undying in Ghost of Yotei, you’ll need to speak to the Storyteller at his location in Ishikari Plain.
He can be found at Storyteller’s Rest in the northern part of the area. Once you speak to him, you’ll need to locate four wind chime locations, then duel the Undying Samurai.
The Armor of the Undying features the following perks:
- When using the proper weapon, simply staggering an enemy restores health. This can be upgraded up to the massive level.
- When using the proper weapon, Perfect Parry and Perfect Dodge are easier to perform.
- When using the proper weapon, Focus Attacks have a chance to increase stagger damage.
When the game mentions ‘weapon aligned,’ it means you are using the proper weapon that is meant to counter an enemy’s current weapon. For example, the Dual Katanas are meant to be used against spears.
Early-Game Arsenal – Unlock Dual Katanas, Yari, and Odachi
The First Three Additional Weapons Can Be Unlocked Very Quickly:
Early in Ghost of Yotei, you’ll notice that the Katana does not work nearly as well against anything other than a sword. When it comes time to face a spear, a shield-bearing enemy, and even brutes, there’s a much better option just waiting to be collected. You want to make sure you unlock Ghost of Yotei‘s additional weapons as quickly as possible.
How to Unlock Dual Katanas:
- The quest to unlock the Dual Katanas is one of the first missions Atsu will encounter in Ghost of Yotei. When you first start the game, you’ll notice when looking through the Spyglass, that she mentions a location on Mount Yotei where the katanas can be located.
- Collecting the Dual Katanas will help against Spears.
- To become exceptionally OP, you’ll want to unlock the Dual Katana’s Spirit Attack, which is called Takezo’s Dual Slash. This attack will melt through any weapon type. To unlock it, you’ll need to complete “Takezo the Unrivaled,” one of the earliest Mythic Tales in the game. It is a difficult quest early on, but it is well-worth doing.
How to Unlock the Spear (Yari):
- The spear – which is called a Yari in Ghost of Yotei – can be unlocked as soon as you gain access to Ishikari Plain. You’ll simply need to visit the island off the western coast of the region. There, you’ll find Sensei Takahashi’s Camp. Complete “The Way of the Yari” to unlock the weapon.
- The Yari will help you against all dual-bladed weapons. Acquiring this weapon as early as possible will make the most difficult enemies in the game feel like much less of a threat.
How to Unlock the Odachi:
- The Odachi is a massive sword that can be collected by visiting Master Yoshida’s Dojo in Tokachi Range. The dojo is located along the northwestern edge of the region, as seen in the image above.
- The Odachi allows Atsu to not only to cut through Brutes as if they were any other enemy, but it is also the best early-game option for shield-bearing enemies. Much later in the game, you’ll unlock the Kusarigama, but in the early stages of the game, the Odachi is the definition of OP.
Make it Even Better – The Best Early Charms
Use These Six Charms to Get OP Early:
In Ghost of Yotei, Charms will take a good build and make them great. They will be the final major component of making Atsu incredibly OP very early. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to use five charms right away. You’ll need to unlock each slot as you progress. However, to unlock new charm slots, you’ll simply need to find more charms. If you check the Charms section in the Gear menu, it will tell you exactly how many are required to unlock the next slot.
After you have each slot unlocked, you can turn them into Major Charm slots by acquiring more Charms. Because of this, you should always take every chance you can to collect Charms. Complete side quests, visit Fox Dens, purchase them from vendors, and visit the game’s major Shrines.
These six charms should be your goal. Acquire them as soon as you can, as they will level up even when they are sitting in your inventory:
- Father’s Charm: This Charm can be collected from the Mount Yotei Shrine. You can find the entrance to the shrine along the western coast of the Yotei Grasslands. This charm starts off by providing a small amount of health every time you perform a Perfect Parry. It will eventually provide a major amount of health when fully upgraded. Using this with the Bounty Master Armor turns Perfect Parries into an extremely OP tool.
- Charm of Futsunushi: This Charm can be collected from the Faithful Leap shrine in northeast Tokachi Range. This makes Perfect Parries and Perfect Dodges much easier to perform. Works best in conjunction with Father’s Charm and the Bounty Master Armor or Armor of the Undying.
- Charm of Mount Yotei: This Charm is the reward for completing the Reliquary of Courage puzzle in central Yotei Grasslands. This charm begins by simply lowering all damage taken, but becomes incredibly powerful as you level it up by completing all Reliquary Puzzles. Even at level three, it begins to add health for all Perfect Parries. Working with the previous charms, you’ll see how it can be extremely powerful.
- Charm of Last Chance: Purchase this Charm from Taro the Scavenger as soon as you interact with him. For only 150 coins, you’ll get one of the most useful charms in the game. Whenever you take lethal damage, this charm will automatically use the healing technique. As long as you have Spirit, you cannot die.
- Charm of Enduring Resolve: This Charm is acquired by completing the Twin Path Fox Den in northern Ishikari Plain. You’ll find it just south of the White Deer Woodlands. This Charm has a chance of returning 1 Spirit node any time you use a Spirit skill.
- Charm of Confident Strikes: Also purchased from Taro the Scavenger. This charm has a chance of filling one Spirit node any time you Stagger an enemy with the Katana.
More to Do – Upgrades, Supplemental Weapons, & Wolf Bond
There’s Always More to Do — Upgrades:
The above list of items simply marks the best equipment you can acquire in the early stages of the game. However, to truly become OP, you’ll need to upgrade them to the highest possible level.
You will not be able to acquire Shinobi Steel and Gun Parts until you reach Teshio Ridge, so you will not be able to fully upgrade your weapons and armor unless you are willing to skip a fair amount of content and venture north. However, you can get Oni Raider Masks by venturing to the Ishikari Plain region.
You’ll have a chance to collect Oni Raider Mask pieces with just about any Oni Raider kill. This will allow you to upgrade most weapons halfway. Some armor will not require these items, but most will.
The perks that accompany each armor set are greatly enhanced when you upgrade each set, so make sure to take the time to collect resources if you wish to maximize their potential for pure OP.
Supplamental Weapons – Scorch Bombs, Blind Bombs, and Metsubushi:
Do not discount the supplemental weapons that Atsu has at her disposal. While bows can be useful if you wish to take out foes from a distance, players that like to get up close will find Bombs and Quickfire Weapons incredibly useful for crowd control.
Here’s how to get the three main early-game supplemental weapons:
- Metsubushi: If you acquire the Bounty Master Armor, you’ll have already unlocked this incredibly powerful blinding weapon. You simply need to defeat Crow Genzo, one of the early-game bounties.
- Scorch Bombs & Blind Bombs: These throwable weapons are obtainable by visiting Ina, the Bomb Maker at Fire Cricket Canyon in southern Ishikari Plain. You’ll get each weapon for completing her first two quests.
Wolf Bond – Visit Wolf Dens Early:
The final tip is to take the time to level up your bond with the Wolf. As you make your way through the game, the Wolf becomes an incredibly powerful ally. Every skill you choose will make the Wolf more likely to show up, and increase their ability to affect the fight. Even early in the game, this can be extremely effective.
This is by no means the only way to create an OP build in Ghost of Yotei, but after playing close to 60 hours on Lethal difficulty with this build, we can safely say it is the best OP build we’ve encountered.
