Halo: Reach is as good a place as any for anyone new to the Halo series to start with. It’s a prequel to the franchise, taking place on the titular Reach as the super soldier Spartan units fought back against the alien Covenant. This was the height of the Spartan program, so unlike Master Chief, each unit was equipped with a specialty, giving them more gameplay opportunities during combat.

By 2014, the Wolfenstein franchise had become stale, which is why Wolfenstein: The New Order was so refreshing. The twist is that after BJ fails, he goes into a coma, allowing the Nazis to win, and thus the whole world entered an alternative state wherein Germany ruled with an iron thumb. It’s the strangest game in the series, thanks to characters with heightened personalities and strange quirks. Best of all, the shooting is beyond bloody, making every Nazi kill satisfying.

Mechs “R” Us
Titanfall 2 is a short game, but it is jam-packed with constant action that will make any mech fan explode with glee. Players can fight as a human soldier in some missions, and pilot their mech in others. Both fighters feel incredibly precise, thanks to the developer, Respawn Entertainment, having a background within the Call of Duty franchise. The human segments are faster, allowing players to run across walls while they shoot enemies, and the mech missions are slower, but players will feel the weight of every extra-large bullet they fire, which is visceral.
Timesplitters 2
Time Traveling Shenanigans
Timesplitters 2 is a great shooter because it varies things up in each level, not just with environments, but with time periods. The agents within the game have to try and stop anomalies, leading them to everything from an experimental base in Siberia in the 90s to an Old West setting in the 1800s.

BioShock is an atmospheric horror game set beneath the ocean in a failed utopia called Rapture. After making his way to the facility, the protagonist, Jack, will have to scrounge for ammo, new weapons, and other supplies to survive the mutated denizens. Through radio interactions with “normal” survivors, players will be able to piece together the mystery of what happened to Rapture, all leading to one grand finale. The shooting is solid, but what’s more exciting is getting new powers through Plasmids.
Metroid Prime Remastered
Samus Goes 3D
Not every franchise can transition into 3D well, but thankfully, Metroid did via Metroid Prime. Players could shoot enemies and activate puzzles in first-person, but the perspective transitioned into third-person whenever they activated Samus’s Morph Ball. What worked best of all on the GameCube was that it was still a game wherein exploration was more important than action. It wasn’t a horror game, but it was haunting as players were on an isolated planet without much guidance or allies to call on. It can best be experienced now on Switch thanks to the remaster.
