A long-lost isekai gem returns on Crunchyroll after 9 years

Isekai remains one of anime’s most popular genres, built around protagonists who are thrust into new worlds and must quickly adapt, survive, and sometimes search for a way back home. One of the most unique takes on this premise is Kadokawa’s Yojo Senki: Saga of Tanya the Evil, which follows a man reincarnated into an alternate World War I reality as a girl named Tanya, tasked with becoming a ruthless soldier. It initially took off as a light novel before its first season was developed. But since its anime debut in 2017, the series has been on an indefinite hiatus until now.

Yojo Senki: Saga of Tanya the Evil is slated to return with season 2 in 2026, and a new trailer has been released to mark the occasion. Takayuki Yamamoto is taking over directing duties from Yutaka Uemura for the new episodes at Studio NUT. Returning from Season 1, Kenta Ihara will once again handle scriptwriting, while Yuji Hosogoe also returns as both character designer and chief animation director.

First announced five long years ago, Yojo Senki: Saga of Tanya the Evil season 2 is finally nearing its long-awaited return, and currently stands in the top 3 most anticipated series next year on MyAnimeList. Its popularity has kept it toe-to-toe with Kadokawa’s other popular Isekai titles, Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World-, Overlord, and Konosuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World!, albeit without any continuation from its initial season like its contemporaries. However, a film followed the first season, titled Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie. The franchise continues to publish new light novel installments, and its 2016 manga adaptation, illustrated by Chika Tōjō and serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s Comp Ace, is still ongoing. However, the light novel, manga, and anime series all share different continuities to varying degrees.

The first season and the movie of Saga of Tanya the Evil are now available to stream on Crunchyroll in both English and Japanese. The returning voice cast for season 2 includes Aoi Yuki as Tanya Degurechaff, Saori Hayami as Visha, Shinichiro Miki as Rerugen, Tessho Genda as Rudersdorf, and Hochu Otsuka as Zettour.
