Try These If You're Bored In Fallout 4

Amazon’s Fallout TV show has been some of the best PR the Fallout franchise has received in ages, proving yet again that there’s still plenty of interest in the post-nuclear war RPG series that currently lies in Bethesda’s hands. The show’s popularity has led to an increase in players for titles like Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4, with the latter having received its controversial Anniversary Edition in November 2025.

Fallout 4: All Romances, Ranked

Fallout 4 is one of those games that has a little something for everyone. And that little something includes several different romantic paths.

If you’re among the people returning to the Fallout universe, and in particular to the Commonwealth in Fallout 4, you might quickly find yourself a bit bored. Maybe you’ve played through most of the game’s content already, and you’re looking for something new to do, and would like to stick around in the franchise’s latest entry for as long as possible. In that case, I’ve got a few suggestions to keep you busy, at least until these rumored remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas are unveiled.

Visit Some Lesser-Known Locations

There Are Probably Some Spots You’ve Missed In Your Travels

The Commonwealth might not be the biggest open-world setting out there, but it’s stocked full of places that are pretty easy to miss if you’re not specifically looking for them. Boston is especially densely packed, so I recommend spending some extra time in the city and its close vicinity, but don’t hesitate to wander further, either.

Some of the game’s more remarkable spots are located far off the beaten path and can be insanely rewarding to find if you go looking. Travel to the far corners of the map, and you might find unmarked locations you didn’t even know about previously. The same goes for the DLC areas; make sure to comb through Nuka-World and Far Harbor carefully. For a full list of cool places to visit, try this list of locations here.

Travel With A Different Companion

It’s Time To Say Goodbye To Your Favorite

Everyone’s got their favorite companion in Fallout 4, and if you don’t, chances are you prefer to travel with Dogmeat with the Lone Wanderer perk on. If you’re the latter type, please hire a talking companion immediately. They have some pretty funny comments during quests you complete, and you’ll get to develop your relationship with them if you make choices that align with their moral compass. Most of them also have companion quests that shed more light on who they are and their past, and by the end of them, you unlock some pretty handy Affinity Perks.

Now, if you’re the former kind and always travel with the same companion, I challenge you to get someone you’ve always disliked for whatever reason. And don’t forget about the DLC companions, too. You have Porter Gage, the settler turned raider, and Old Longfellow with his bitter and tragic past. They don’t get as much love as the others. Better yet, do the ultimate challenge and travel with Preston, who’s likely to poke you about settlements every two seconds.

Try Survival Mode

One of the best ways to bring spice back into a game is to make it more challenging, and Fallout 4’s survival mode is one of the best ways to do that. While Skyrim’s survival mode feels tedious, in Fallout 4, it perfectly fits the setting. There are some pretty big caveats to keep in mind, though, the major one being that saving is restricted to sleeping. You also won’t be able to fast travel; you’ll need to eat and drink regularly, and you’ll have to find yourself a doctor to cure diseases.

Forget about carrying infinite ammo as well, because ammo now has weight, and if you happen to go over your carrying capacity, you’ll suffer from fatigue. There are a few other rule changes and quirks you’ll have to consider, but those are some of the major challenges you’ll be faced with. And, of course, tougher enemies, which won’t show you any mercy.

Build Settlements

Make Preston Happy At Last

Settlement building in Fallout 4 has always been a bit of a hate-it-or-love-it feature. There are some players who purely play the game to this day because they enjoy the settlement system and use mods to make it even more complex and detailed. Even in vanilla mode, it can be quite a bit of fun to manage multiple bases around the Commonwealth, ensuring everyone has enough resources, that everyone’s got a specific job, and that you’re defending them from raiders.

That said, I totally understand the general wariness towards it. The game tries to push you to do settlements if you want to do the Minutemen quest line, so you feel obligated to grind them out. Well, why not give them a chance? Lean into it for your next playthrough, and learn all the ropes of building good settlements in the game. And hey, if you do end up getting bored, you can just buddy up to the raiders in Nuka-World and destroy everything you made.

Install Mods

If there’s one good thing to be said about Bethesda’s RPGs, it’s their modding capability. Fallout 4 is no different in that regard, with every concept under the sun somehow implemented into the game now thanks to mods. Some can be pretty silly, like the Thomas the Tank mod, but others, like Fallout London, are an experience of their own with countless new quests, locations, items, gear, and more.

Modding is a rabbit hole that lets you decide how deep you want to go. Are you okay with just a few cosmetic changes to the game? Or maybe you’d like to completely change how the wasteland looks, with massive graphical and texture overhauls, new quests, animals, and even deep settlement gameplay? This is the real way to actually keep Fallout 4 interesting even years after, so don’t be afraid to take the plunge into Nexus Mods.

Go Murder Hobo And Reload

Have You Ever Wondered What Would Happen If..?

The murder hobo playstyle isn’t universally embraced by everyone, but I do believe it should be experienced by every player at least once when boredom hits. If you’ve ever walked into Diamond City and wondered what would happen if you simply opened fire on everyone or shot a mini-nuke in the middle of the marketplace, then this part is for you. Make a quick save, and then do your terrible deed. You’ll probably get absolutely swarmed by guards, but I’d say it’s worth it to experience it at least once.

Fallout 4: Best Armor Sets, Ranked

Fallout 4 contains many useful armor sets that players should definitely try to find, but these are arguably the best.

You can also experience this in a quest-supported way in Nuka-World. Instead of helping the raiders conquer the other parks (or even if you do help them), you could free the slaves there by opening fire on everyone in Nuka-Town. Porter might despise you for it, but that’s what he gets for being a raider. Oh, and Preston will love you.

Try A New Build

Tired Of Being The Same Ol’ Gunslinger?

We all have that one guilty pleasure build we like to run in every Fallout 4 playthrough. Mine, personally, is the charismatic gunslinger who can talk her way out of just about anything. Maybe you love to do crazy VATS builds, or you rely on power armor and roleplay a Brotherhood member. Whatever the case is, I’m challenging you to go the opposite way. Think of the type of gameplay you firmly believe you’d hate from the bottom of your heart.

If melee-only makes you internally cringe, it’s time to make an unga-bunga build. If you’ve never really used any explosives and find them a hassle, make a demolitionist expert. Maybe you enjoy running in guns blazing and can’t be bothered to use stealth or charisma, ever? Try them for once, and be surprised by a whole new way of experiencing combat and quests in the game. It could reignite your love or solidify your enjoyment of your go-to playstyle. Either way, you’re winning.

Choose The Institute Ending

Are We The Baddies?

If you’re already a player who regularly sides with the Institute, I’ll get to you in a moment. For the rest, be honest: have you ever decided to side with them towards the end of the Fallout 4 main campaign? If the answer is absolutely no, then this is your moment. There are entire quest lines and even a dedicated companion that become available to you when you choose the Institute. Sure, you might be the bad guy in everyone else’s eyes, possibly, and you’ll have to do some morally questionable things, but it’s time to break the mould and try something new.

Now, if you’ve done this many times before, the answer is simple: pick a different faction to support. If you’ve never sided with the Railroad, hit up Deacon and Desdemona stat. If you think the Brotherhood is lame, it’s time to change that perspective and help them deal with the Institute instead. Whatever you usually do, do the opposite, even when every fiber in your being screams at you to stay in your comfort zone.
