PSA: Don’t Transmog Your World of Warcraft Characters Quite Yet

World of Warcraft recently announced that every character is soon going to get one free Transmog rebate that can be applied to a full outfit. This freebie will be automatically applied to each existing World of Warcraft character starting in Patch 12.0.1 before the Midnight expansion, so fans might want to hold off on fixing their Transmogs until then.

The Midnight Pre-Patch for World of Warcraft just went live on January 20, bringing with it the lion’s share of system changes for the upcoming expansion. One of the most important fundamental improvements came to the Transmog system, which now works by applying appearances to gear slots via outfits, rather than to individual items.

World of Warcraft Is Checking Off a Lot of Boxes From Players’ Housing Wish Lists

World of Warcraft’s new Housing system is officially out, but Blizzard still has a long list of features it hopes to add in the not-so-distant future.

WoW Giving Out One Free Outfit Transmog Per Character

Soon, World of Warcraft will be implementing another change that should help players adapt to this system. In a recent forum post, WoW community manager Kaivax confirmed every character will be getting a rebate for one free Transmog in Midnight Patch 12.0.1. Using this discount, each character will be able to save one complete outfit for free, saving thousands of gold in the process.

This was done because of the way World of Warcraft implemented the new Transmog system. To facilitate such a drastic change, World of Warcraft had to wipe all existing Transmogs. Unfortunately, saving an outfit now costs twice as much as setting a Transmog in the old system at max level, meaning fans with dozens of characters would have to spend thousands of gold just to reset their outfits back to how they were before.

Transmog costs also no longer scale with level, meaning low-level characters now must also spend over 1,000 gold to set up an outfit, rather than a few dozen.

It is unclear exactly when this Transmog rebate will be delivered, but World of Warcraft: Midnight itself releases March 2. Patch 12.0.1 will likely release a little before that date, so players can probably expect it within the next few weeks at the latest, but it could arrive as early as January 27 along with the Pre-Patch event.

How to Get the Free World of Warcraft Transmog

Once this update arrives, gamers won’t have to do anything special to claim this free Transmog; the fee for their first saved outfit will simply be waived on each character. However, this will only apply to the first one, so fans should be sure to save their most complex outfits, including alternate weapon sets for applicable World of Warcraft classes, to get the most out of the rebate.

Every character that already exists should get this free Transmog, and ostensibly any characters that are made between now and the update will get it as well. It is unclear if characters made after Patch 12.0.1 will also have their first Transmogs be given for free, so players who are thinking about making any new alts might want to do so now so they can cash in on the freebie.

Regardless, there may be another way for fans to save big on even more of their Transmogs. The Trial of Style is a semi-annual event that runs for a week around March and August each year. While the Trial of Style includes a fashion contest minigame that rewards tons of unique World of Warcraft cosmetics, it has also historically made Transmogging free during the time period.

Assuming this will still be the case with the new Transmog system in World of Warcraft, the Trial of Style will become one of the most important events in the game, as saving a Transmog outfit is not only more expensive now, but multiple outfits can be set up ahead of time without the need to adjust or re-apply it with new gear. The next Trial of Style starts on March 20, so players will only have to wait a couple of weeks after Midnight to find out if it still affects Transmog prices – and to set up all of their outfits if so.
