What are we all playing this weekend?

Saturdays are for waking up, having a big stretch, and wondering where the hell you packed the electric toothbrush charger.

In that first three day grace period, I could tell myself ‘Not to worry, there are only so many removal boxes. It will turn up!” By day five, the little red flashing light had come on. The brush only has a couple of charges left. I’ve searched all the obvious boxes, the ones marked ‘Bathroom’ and ‘Toiletries’. Now I’m onto anything that’s still taped shut. ‘Crockery’, ‘Books’, even ‘Eldritch summoning reagents’. Nada. Well, there was a half-eaten bag of Percy Pigs but after polishing those off I worry I may have made my dental needs more pressing.

Well, whatever the case, let us put boxes behind us and dive into what we are all playing this weekend.

I continue to misdiagnose people, fill my pockets with plague mold and succumb to apathy in Pathologic 3. Right now I’m thinking about how the game portrays medicine and symptoms. Beyond that, I might play more of neat fantasy autobattler Turnbound, or check out new metroidvania Mio: Memories In Orbit.

I should probably give Hytale a go, for reasons outside of monkey-wrenching it into a Steam Deck. Minecraft is easily one of my most-played games ever, and that level of familiarity can make it too easy to overlook shortcomings; a modernised alternative should be at least interesting, even if what’s launched so far is mere scaffolding for its future architecture.

Still cooking away on a top secret, hush hush game, and I need to spend some time in Arknights: Endfield now we’re chipping at it down the guide mines. But in preparation for Endfield, I picked up Factorio earlier this week, and despite being a man who swore blind he’d never get lost in the sauce of conveyor belt optimisation, I fully submerged myself in it and have now been cast adrift. No, don’t come save me. My uranium mine is just coming together! Let me stay out here for… I dunno… 200 more hours, maybe?

Aside from the usual rotating evening shenanigans of Trackmania, Arc Raiders, and Mass Effect 3 multiplayer? Well, was there ever any doubt that I’d get sucked into Arknights: Endfield? I got sucked into Genshin, and then Honkai: Star Rail. And now we’ve got Endfield, which has factory game mechanics to boot. I never stood a chance.

We’ll see. I might fancy some American Truck Simulator, more Crusader Kings 3, maybe I’ll finally make some strong progress on that Yakuza 3 re-run. You never know with me. I’m a box of mysteries.

I’ve had a very busy return this week as I am suddenly in the midst of a grueling game that I must surmount for guides and editorial purposes. But in the meantime, did you know that I rescued all of my old Game Boys and cartridges from my parents’ house during our recent visit? Some of ‘em still have my old saves on them from 20 years ago! Have YOU played Batman: Return of the Joker, which came out in 1992 for the OG Game Boy? Trust me, that one’s about as hard as the new modern game that I’m playing for work!

While I’ve been enjoying trying out games on the Steam Deck, marveling at all the management games in my Steam library working on such a small device, I’m running into the issue of my eyesight. I just can’t make out all the tiny text and squeezed UIs. This is all to say that I booted up Oxygen Not Included on the handheld and forgot I was meant to be testing it, and instead I’m not playing a new Oxygen Not Included run on my desktop. What you gonna do?

And you, reader dear, what are you playing this weekend?
