Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream sets Nintendo Direct stream

As Nintendo’s first-party offerings begin to fully focus on Switch 2, there’s one more major release still targeting its predecessor in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. With January 2026 now on its way out, the company has set a new Nintendo Direct for this Thursday.

The news arrived on 26th January via the Nintendo Today app, which has slowly but steadily become the video game giant’s go-to news channel besides the Direct Streams. This all-new exclusive presentation Direct will start at 6am PT on 29th January (via Wario64). The length of the presentation wasn’t specified, but considering we don’t know much about the sequel’s ins and outs, we’d like to believe it’s a meaty one.

Following a surprise reveal in March 2025, the game reappeared last September, teasing a spring 2026 release window which feels way more solid now that a game-specific Direct has been locked. You can watch the previous trailer below:

While the looks at the game released so far give us a good sense of its goofy, cheerful, and relaxed tone, we’ve been wondering whether there’s more to the central gameplay loop than in past entries (with the original one being a Japan exclusive). Many players are expecting a cozy life sim, yet based on Tomodachi Life (3DS), we doubt Nintendo aims to deliver another chill experience that overlaps with Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ recent Switch 2 upgrade or the upcoming Pokémon Pokopia.

In the previous games, the focus was on fostering relationships between Mii characters living on an island and helping them with everyday problems. Living the Dream appears to be a bit bigger and more ambitious with its pitch, but the scope and depth of its creative tools haven’t been explained yet.

In any case, this week’s Direct should clear up any doubts and potentially set a price tag and a definitive release date. Will a native Switch 2 version happen? That’s another question up in the air we’d like answered. Come back on Thursday and we’ll give you the rundown.
