Summary
- Garp remains a powerhouse, defending Foosha Village and trying to resign from the Navy.
- Garp embarks on a rescue mission to save Koby, showcasing his importance to the Marines.
- Garp faces off against Blackbeard Pirates, gets captured, and survives, leaving his fate uncertain.
Garp has always been a fan-favorite powerhouse of the One Piece series, showing off a glimpse of how strong characters from Roger’s generation were. Although he is far past his prime, Garp still demonstrates an enormous level of strength that proves his position as the Hero of the Navy and one of their strongest soldiers. Plus, his position as Liffy’s grandfather in One Piece, and the mentor of Koby, has set him up to be one of One Piece’s most important characters.
Garp, so far, has one of the most interesting arcs in One Piece. After struggling with the moral dilemmas between family and duty on Marineford, Garp interestingly continued his journey as a Marine, instead of abandoning the corrupt organization that took the life of his grandson, Ace. However, what happened to Garp after Marineford in One Piece provides an interesting look at how much the Paramount War changed this seemingly simple character.

After the War of the Best of One Piece’s Marineford Arc, where Garp witnessed the death of his grandson’s son, Ace, Garp was distraught with the state of the Marines. However, with the increased number of pirate attacks, Garp returned to be stationed at One Piece’s East Blue where he would defend Foosha Village and reunite with Dadan, a Mountain Bandit and pivotal figure in raising both Luffy and Ace. Although Dadan blamed Garp for Ace’s death here, Makino reveals here that Garp is suffering greatly from the loss of his grandson.
I have no sympathy for criminals, but for my family I do. – Garp
At the same time, it is revealed that both Garp and his close ally and former Fleet Admiral of One Piece, Sengoku, attempted to step down from their positions in the Navy. However, although they left their positions, both remained with the Navy in order to teach new Marines. Still, it seems even after stepping down from his position, Garp still performs other tasks besides teaching for the Navy, including escorting the Neptune family from Fishman Island for their first Reverie meeting, as well as escorting them back home, during both the Reverie Arc and Wano Arc.

Weeks after assisting the Neptune Family, Garp hears word that Koby, his closest mentor, has been kidnapped by Blackbeard and taken to the pirate island Hachinosu. Immediately, Garp plans a rescue mission to sail to the island and take back Koby, recruiting Koby’s close ally, Helmeppo, other members of SWORD, and Tashigi in order to save Koby.

After this, Garp engages in a massive clash between himself and One Piece’s Blackbeard Pirates that are present: Kuzan, Vasco Shot, Sanjuan Wolf, Shiryu, and Avalo Pizarro. Although things seemed like they were going well for the Marines at first, as the others escaped, including Koby, Garp was pierced through the chest by a massive ice spike from Kuzan. However, Garp encourages those who left that they are the future of the Marines, laughing despite his unfortunate situation.
And never forget, you are all the future of the Marines! – Garp
From here, it is revealed that Garp survived his encounter and is currently a prisoner of the Blackbeard Pirates during One Piece’s Elbaf Arc. Although Garp’s next steps in the story are unknown, many fans are worried that Luffy’s grandfather may not survive for much longer. However, fans may have to wait for the serious events of One Piece’s Elbaf Arc to settle down before seeing Garp’s side of the story once again.
