This article contains spoilers for One Piece’s Final Saga.
Summary
- Zoan Devil Fruits, like the Nika Fruit, possess a will that could overpower the user.
- Luffy’s indomitable willpower may prevent him from losing control to the Nika Fruit.
- Circumstances like a weakened resolve could potentially cause Luffy to lose control to the Nika Fruit.
After the reveal of Gear 5 and the true nature of the Gum-Gun Fruit in One Piece, many fans now consider Luffy’s Devil Fruit one of the strongest in the series. Sporting an extremely powerful ability that is only limited by the user’s imagination, when Luffy is in Gear 5, few characters in the series could beat him. However, as many would expect, with Gear 5 being such a powerful form in One Piece, there are bound to be some drawbacks to make it not seem too overpowered.
Although there’s the standard drawback of physically exhausting Luffy, there is another downside to the Nika Fruit in One Piece that fans discuss far less often. The Nika Fruit, much like other Zoan Fruits, possesses a will of its own that can clash with the user of the fruit. Due to this, if Luffy isn’t careful, he could potentially lose control of the Nika Devil Fruit in One Piece, completely losing his personality to the will of the Sun God Nika.

Zoan Devil Fruits Have A Will Of Their Own In One Piece
Sometimes The Devil Fruit Can Dominate The User
In One Piece, when it comes to Zoan Devil Fruits, the fruits themselves are said to have a will of their own. Likely coming from the original creator, the “will” of the Zoan Devil Fruits can sometimes actually be more powerful than the user consuming it. In this case, the fruit itself can basically overwrite the personality of the user, taking away their control. This was seen with the Impel Down jailers who, despite being incredibly strong, were almost feral and far from the normal human beings that they most likely once were.
Zoan Fruits contain a will of their own. – Saint Shepard Ju Peter
As for the Human-Human Fruit Model: Sun God Nika in One Piece, being a Zoan Fruit and not a Paramecia Fruit, many fans are well aware that it may have a will of its own as well. Some fans even say that the will of the Nika Fruit is so powerful that it influences those around it to escape the Marines with the help of the Red Hair Pirates and choose to be eaten by Luffy. Even without these feats, the will of the Nika Fruit seems to be incredibly strong on its own, especially based on how powerful the inspiration for the Devil Fruit is.
Luffy May Have Too Much Willpower To Lose Control Of His Devil Fruit
Even With The Amount Of Power The Sun God Nika Fruit Has
- Luffy’s Gear 5 Already Feels Like A Combination Of Him And Nika
- Luffy’s Willpower Is Incredibly Strong
Already, when the audience sees Luffy enter Gear 5 in One Piece, although he is generally a goofy individual, it seems that his goofiness is heavily influenced by his Devil Fruit. Despite being in incredibly dangerous situations, Luffy fights with a massive smile on his face and constant laughter, two elements that are heavily associated with Nika, as well as the previous user, Joy Boy. From here, it’s safe to assume that some elements of Luffy’s personality are already being lost when he uses Gear 5.

At the same time, however, being the protagonist of One Piece, Luffy is an individual with an incredibly strong willpower, which is evident from his mastery over all forms of Haki. Although the Nika Fruit likely has a strong, with Luffy’s indomitable spirit, it seems unlikely that the Nika Fruit will ever take over Luffy’s personality. While it only slightly influences Luffy, it may take specific circumstances for Luffy’s Devil Fruit to become a failed awakening.
There Are Ways Luffy Could Lose To The Sun God Nika Fruit
If Luffy’s Willpower Is Shaken He Could Lose Control
Mainly, it may be possible for Luffy to lose control over the Nika Fruit if some event causes his willpower to weaken. For example, if something bad happens to one of Luffy’s loved ones, like the Hero of the Navy, Garp, for example, Luffy’s shaken resolve may result in the Sun God Nika taking complete control. Although this may seem bad at first, overall, it could end up being advantageous for Luffy, removing some of his human inhibitions while letting the will of the Sun God guide him in battle.
They called him, “Sun God Nika”! – Who’s-Who
However, no matter how much power Luffy could gain from letting the Nika potentially take control of him, it seems likely that something like this probably won’t happen in the story of One Piece. Still though, based on the fact that Zoan Devil Fruits have wills of their own and that the Sun God Nika likely has an incredibly high amount of willpower, there is always the possibility that Luffy’s Devil Fruit could override his personality. In the end, if something like this was going to happen in One Piece, Oda would likely save it for the very last arcs of the story.
