FromSoftware has been around in the gaming industry for decades, but one of its newest releases, the 2022 action RPG Elden Ring, is easily its most successful yet. As of September 2024, the game has sold over 28.6 million copies across all platforms, which is more than Dark Souls 3‘s and Sekiro‘s combined lifetime sales. Given the unprecedented levels of success that Elden Ring has enjoyed, many have wondered if FromSoftware would be interested in expanding the IP to other mediums. Although FromSoft and publisher Bandai Namco have not outright confirmed that they are working on a film adaptation of Elden Ring, there has been much discussion on the matter.
Shortly after the release of the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki told The Guardian that he was open to an adaptation of Elden Ring, so long as a very strong partner were to step in. A few days later, Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin (who did the worldbuilding for Elden Ring) jokingly teased on his official blog that a movie or TV show based on the game could be in the works. Martin later reiterated during an interview with IGN in February 2025 that there is “talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring,” although he couldn’t say much. Martin did note, however, that his involvement in such a project may be limited, since he’s still busy writing the final Game of Thrones novel, The Winds of Winter.

A Team of Elden Ring Fans Are Making an Anime Based on the Game
Judging by the comments from both Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin, it seems like the Elden Ring movie, if it even exists, won’t be released anytime soon. To some fans of the hit action RPG, that may be really upsetting, especially since the franchise has a lot of potential in the medium of film. However, there is one upcoming unofficial Elden Ring adaptation that is definitely real, and it’s being released in the near future.
A Five-Minute Elden Ring Anime is Coming Out in Summer 2025
Last year, a content creator by the name of Steins Alter revealed that they were working on an anime-style Elden Ring short. The film, which is intended to have a 5-minute runtime, is being created entirely by fans, and it seems to feature many of Elden Ring‘s iconic bosses, such as Malenia, the Black Blade, and Radagon, along with other characters. A 50-second teaser trailer for the anime was posted on YouTube in July 2024, and it garnered more than 1 million views.
Steins Alter’s Elden Ring adaptation was initially scheduled to be released in late 2024, but it was later delayed to summer 2025. To get fans excited about its release, Steins Alter recently posted a second work-in-progress trailer for the film on X/Twitter. Even though the animation depicted in said trailer is far from being finished, impressions of it have been pretty positive so far. A few days ago, the famous Elden Ring player, Let Me Solo Her, stated on X/Twitter that he had the pleasure of watching the team who’s making this Elden Ring anime “behind the scenes” and that, in his opinion, they had been “cooking up something special.” Let Me Solo Her reiterated his enthusiasm for the upcoming project, adding that he hoped fans were as excited for it as he is.
Steins Alter’s Elden Ring Anime May Tide Fans Over Until an Official Elden Ring Film is Released
Let Me Solo Her giving his approval to this Elden Ring anime is a promising sign. Even though it isn’t very long, the fact that Steins Alter is putting this much effort into a project like this is quite impressive. The Elden Ring anime may not be official, but it already looks pretty faithful to FromSoftware’s source material, more so than some other recent big-budget video game adaptations. Maybe a feature-length Elden Ring film will be released someday, but until then, this may be enough to tide some fans over.
