Which 5-Star Should You Get From Commencement Reception?

Free 5-Star Selector Guide in Honkai Star Rail

Getting a 5-Star unit is a big deal for any HSR player, as it can notably improve one of their team comps. When choosing a free 5-star unit, it’s important to look into the character’s Eidolons, as they can be more valuable than getting a character you don’t own. It’s also important to take into account what kind of teams and characters you already have. Nobody wants to end up with a character they don’t have a team for, nor are they willing to get them their team. Here’s the free 5-star selector list of the characters included in the Commencement Reception event in Honkai: Star Rail.

Jing Yuan

His Days Were Short

Jing Yuan is actually one of the weakest characters on this free 5-Star selector list. As he’s one of the classic 5-star units, his kit is outdated and can’t deal the DMG that other DPS deal these days. Jing Yuan could get a buff later that puts him on par with current characters. But, as of now, Jing Yuan is one of the worst choices on this free 5-Star selector list.

  • Conclusion: Don’t get Jing Yuan unless you like his design.

Dan Heng Imbibitor Lunae

Used To Be The Top-Tier DPS

Honkai: Star Rail Lekas Dan Heng Imbibitor Lunae Rerun

Dan Heng Imbibitor Lunae is another character betrayed by time, or by the Devs’ team themselves. He’s an outdated Main DPS that requires an entire team to work for him. Dan Heng Imbibitor Lunae consumes a lot of Skill Points, making characters like Sparkle a must-have in his teams. He’s slightly better than Jing Yuan on this Commencement Reception event, but not at all comparable to the other DPS units on this list.

  • Conclusion: Don’t get Dan Heng Imbibitor Lunae unless you like his design.

Jingliu

Still Irrelevant Even After The Buff

Unfortunately, Jingliu is one of those characters that you can’t wait until they get buffed, since she already got that, and she’s still a mediocre DPS in Honkai: Star Rail. Her kit heavily relies on other characters while she delivers some underwhelming DMG. It’s better to avoid her.

  • Conclusion: Don’t get Jingliu unless you like her design.

Acheron

Even The Meta Gets Powercrept

Acheron is one of those characters who can still barely deliver, especially if you get her E2, which improves her rotations and allows her to cast her Ultimate more often. However, Acheron needs an investment to build, and a dedicated team that can debuff enemies effectively during combat. All that, only to still not be at the level of the current DPS nowadays. So, it’s also better not to pick Acheron during this free 5-Star selector list.

  • Conclusion: Only get Acheron if you’re close or are willing to go for her E2S0. Still, it’s better to avoid her.

Aventurine

Still Viable As A Sustain

Honkai: Star Rail Details Aventurine's Kit

Aventurine is the first real choice on this Free 5-Star selector list in Honkai: Star Rail. While he doesn’t offer the DMG or utility that the new sustain characters can give, he still can deliver an unbreakable shield that ensures your team can survive the hardest content in the game. Moreover, Aventurine procs a lot of Follow-up attacks during combat, which makes him a solid choice for Follow-up teams in Honkai: Star Rail.

  • Conclusion: Only go for Aventurine if you’re lacking sustain characters.

Kafka

S-Tier But With Conditions

The recent changes to Kafka and Black Swan greatly improved the DoT combat in Honkai: Star Rail. Not only that, but Hysilens made her way into Kafka teams and further improved her team’s performance. Without Black Swan and Hysilens, Kafka is underwhelming at best and can’t hold her own weight during combat.

Note that, if you get Kafka from the Commencement Reception event, you need to go after Black Swan and Hysilens, which is an expensive hunt. It’s a pricey team that may or may not survive the constant changes to the game’s meta. So, only choose Kafka if you have or are willing to go after Black Swan and Hysilens in Honkai: Star Rail.

  • Conclusion: Only get Kafka if you have or are willing to go after Black Swan and Hysilens.

Sparkle

Must-Have With Her Buff

A screenshot from Honkai: Star Rail character Sparkle's teaser trailer.

Sparkle is one of the best choices to make on this Free 5-Star selector list, especially after the recent buffs that take her kit to another level. Not only that, but even if you already have Sparkle, her E1 is an additional great addition to her utility, as it increases her team’s ATK by 40% while also permanently increasing her SPD by 15%. Her E2 offers the team to ignore up to 30% of enemies’ DEF, which is even more insane. Not to mention, Sparkle is currently one of the best supports for characters like Archer and Sparxie, who are some of the best DPS units in Honkai: Star Rail.

  • Conclusion: Sparkle is a must-have, even if you already have her at E0 or E1.
