In Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, Magikarp evolves into one of the most powerful Water-type Pokemon in the entire game, Gyarados. However, getting Magikarp to evolve into Gyarados can be a little tedious, as leveling is a chore with this Pokemon.
For players interested in getting their Magikarp to become a Gyarados quickly, there are a couple of methods that streamline the process. This guide covers the exact location where players can find Magikarp, and the best ways to help it evolve into Gyarados. Here are the details.
How to Find & Evolve Pikachu in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen
Here’s how to find Pikachu in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen and evolve it into Raichu.
How to Get Magikarp in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen
The two fastest ways to get Magikarp in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen:
- Magikarp Salesman: An NPC in Route 4’s Pokemon Center sells a Magikarp for ¥500. This Pokemon Center is located right next to the entrance to Mt. Moon.
- Old Rod: You can get Old Rod in Vermillion City by talking to the Fisherman in the house right next to the Pokemon Center. Use Old Rod on any body of water in the game, and you’ll find a Magikarp immediately.
If you catch Magikarp using a Good Rod (found in Fuchsia City), you can find Level 15 Magikarp that know Tackle, making leveling easier.
The Magikarp sold by the Magikarp Salesman has the standard 1/8192 chance of being shiny. If you’re interested, you can use the soft reset shiny hunting method (save before getting the Magikarp, and reload if you fail to get a shiny).
How to Evolve Magikarp into Gyarados in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen
Magikarp evolves into Gyarados at level 20 in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. If you bought a Magikarp from Magikarp Salesman or caught it using an Old Rod, it will be level 5. Since Magikarp does not learn any battling moves until level 15, this means you will need to find a way to level it up by alternate means. There are three ways to do this:
- Switch Training: Lead battles with the Magikarp, and switch to another Pokemon immediately. If you win, Magikarp will get half of the experience.
- Day Care: Leave Magikarp with the Day Care NPC on Route 5 for automatic experience gain.
- Exp. Share: Capture 50 different species of Pokemon and talk to the Professor Oak’s Aide in the Lookout Station in Route 15 to obtain the Experience Share. Give Exp. Share to Magikarp to hold, and it will get half of the experience from every battle when it is in the party.
