At long last, Wizards of the Coast has lifted the curtain on what Dungeons & Dragons fans can expect from the TTRPG throughout the rest of 2026. Announced over the weekend at GAMA Expo in Louisville, Kentucky, the new publishing plan involves a seasonal approach that feels comparable to that of a live-service video game, focusing the entire franchise on a specific theme for three months at a time.
“Using major book releases as an anchor point, Seasons structure connected products and play initiatives to build a stronger sense of community and ongoing conversation around the major releases,” Wizards wrote in a press release obtained by Polygon. The release also notes that an update to the D&D Encounters program will emphasize these seasonal themes for in-store D&D play sessions. For the back-half of 2026, we’re looking at horror, magic, and champions as the seasonal themes with each “anchored” by a major sourcebook release.
This news comes after months of silence from Wizards regarding content and sourcebook releases for this year, likely due to significant turnover and restaffing over the last eight months. 2025 saw the exit of longtime creative leads Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford, who left the company and joined Critical Role’s Darrington Press in June. Shortly thereafter, Dan Youb was tapped as the new head of D&D. More recently, Wizards has hired creatives like Justice Ramin Armin and James Haeck as core team members. With a new team in place, Wizards has finally revealed what’s to come. Let’s take a closer look:
Season of Horror
April to June 2026
March 15, 2026 marked the 10th anniversary of Curse of Strahd’s release. Arguably the most widely beloved fifth-edition sourcebook, the gothic horror adventure feels like the obvious inspiration behind Season of Horror. The original Ravenloft adventure was first published in 1983 and introduced the vampire lord Strahd von Zarovich. While it has remained popular in the years since, Curse of Strahd elevated Ravenloft and Strahd to new heights. 2021’s Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft delved even deeper, with new horror mechanics that expanded Ravenloft’s scope. Season of Horror is primed to do that to an even greater degree.
Ravenloft: The Horrors Within
Release Schedule:
- Pre-order April 13
- Master Tier release June 2
- Hero Tier release June 9
- Wide release June 16
MSRP: $59.99
Description: Ravenloft: The Horrors Within will deliver more player options like new horror-themed subclasses, species, backgrounds, and Dark Gift feats. It will also deliver content around Darklords and Domains of Dread, as well as dozens of Fearsome Mists Denizens, including potential allies like the iconic Rudolph van Richten. The Horrors Within is a complete package for DMs to build a horror-themed campaign, with content that spans multiple subgenres like gothic, dark fantasy, cosmic, the occult, and more.
When Wizards released playtest materials for horror subclasses last May, everybody assumed that we’d return to Ravenloft at some point. Sure enough, that’s going to be the case. We can safely expect revised subclasses for the following: Bard (College of Spirits), Cleric (Grave Domain), Rogue (Phantom), Sorcerer (Shadow Sorcery), and Warlock (Hexblade Patron and Undead Patron), along with new subclasses for the Artificer (Reanimator) and Ranger (Hollow Warden).
Curse of Strahd introduced the Haunted One background, but offered very little in terms of character options. Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft remedied that by adding the Investigator background along with other mechanics to infuse characters with a touch of horror. Dark Gifts are described in Van Richten’s Guide as supernatural gifts that express “both a mysterious power and insidious influence,” essentially functioning almost like a Warlock pact and a background fused into one. The most important thing that The Horrors Within will achieve is to adapt all of this into the 2024 ruleset. Among the update’s biggest changes: ability score increases and origin feats will now be incorporated into backgrounds, instead of race.
Van Richten’s Guide also dedicated roughly 140 pages to fleshing out the Domains of Dread within Ravenloft. These demiplanes are each ruled over by an evil Darklord trapped within it. Strahd’s domain of dread, called Barovia, presents a vampiric gothic horror. Others explored body, cosmic, or folk horror. One basically centers on a zombie invasion. Another has a Hunger Games-style battle royale scenario. It seems like The Horrors Within will provide Dungeon Masters with the resources needed to explore domains like these in even greater detail.
Tarokka Deck
Release Date: June 2026
MSRP: $24.99
Tarokka Decks have been a part of Ravenloft since its inception. Originally a 54-card, tarot-like collection of cards, Tarokka Decks allow the DM to add a little fortune-telling into the mix. In August, Wizards will release a 60-card deck “designed to enhance storytelling, character creation, or gameplay with Ravenloft: The Horrors Within.”
The Horrors Within: Dungeon Master’s Screen
Release Date: June 2026
MSRP: $24.99
Wizards is also releasing a four-panel DM screen themed specifically around The Horrors Within. Expect moody Ravenloft artwork on the player-facing side and at least some of Ravenloft’s horror mechanics on the back. For DMs running a horror campaign in-person, this should be very useful.
The Horrors Within: Map Pack
Release Date: June 2026
MSRP: $24.99
Easily the most interesting addition as part of D&D’s new seasonal model, Season of Horror ends with a map pack. That probably means The Horrors Within won’t come with all of the maps needed to run the campaign.
Season of Magic
July to September 2026
Similar to how the horror subclasses Unearthed Arcana hinted at a return to Ravenloft, other UA materials last year focused on arcane and mystic subclasses, along with the Psion class, hinting at this broad focus on high magic. For the most part, the main point of this seems to be updating D&D’s various subclasses for the 2024 ruleset.
Arcana Unleashed
Release Date: September 2026
MSRP: $49.99
Description: Arcana Unleashed will be the ultimate guide for D&D magic enthusiasts offering more high-magic character creation options and a new magic item system that will allow items to grow in power alongside character leveling.
Season of Magic emphasizes the D&D realms where magic is prevalent. Most interesting here is the new magic item system that allows them to grow in power over time. D&D has experimented with versions of this idea before. Starting with the Tal’Dorei Campaign Setting released in 2017, the official Critical Role D&D materials have featured Vestiges of Divergence from Exandria, powerful artifacts that evolve over time from a dormant state to awakened and exalted. 2021’s Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons had a similar power scaling structure for some items that you steep in a dragon’s hoard.
By the sound of it, this new system will be far more straightforward, with magic items scaling directly to a character’s level.
Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall
Release: September 2026
MSRP: $29.99
Description: Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall is D&D’s ultimate Red Wizards adventure, outlining an all-new Wizard War as well as a deep dive into the powerful magical society of Thay.
You might remember that Red Wizards appeared as the villains in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. They come from a nation in eastern Faerûn called Thay, a magocratic society with a rigid social structure. Red Wizards have been used in 5e before, almost always as villains venturing to the Sword Coast, namely in adventures like Hoard of the Dragon Queen, The Rise of Tiamat, and Princes of the Apocalypse.
1995’s Spellbound from the AD&D 2e era covered Thay in great detail, outlining its internal power struggles. Thay’s society has eight schools of magic, each governed by a master wizard called a Zulkir, and together, the Council of Zulkir rules over the entire nation. In the ongoing canonical D&D storyline, the wizard Szass Tam was once the Zulkir of necromancy. He eventually became a lich and took over Thay during the War of the Zulkirs. Deadfall will likely pick up sometime after those events, presumably with some of the surviving Zulkirs mounting an assault against Szass Tam’s reign.
D&D Reference Card Decks: Spell Decks, Magic Item Decks, and Monster Decks
Release: August 2026
Description: Adorned with beautiful illustrations and content reflecting the 2024 5e Core Rulebook, these cards allow players and DMs a tactile accessory to enhance and facilitate gameplay
Season of Champions
October to December 2026
Wizards of the Coast has yet to confirm any official products for Season of Champions, but has confirmed it will include some kind of “anchor product” similar to The Horrors Within and Arcana Unleashed. The only other Unearthed Arcana that doesn’t really fit into the other two seasonal themes is the apocalyptic subclasses playtest. That’s led to theories that D&D 5e might finally return to the Dark Sun setting. The Gladiator Fighter subclass and the Sorcerer-King Warlock patron certainly fit that theme.
Dark Sun would neatly align with the idea of “Champions.” In the original setting, characters function as freedom fighters, gladiators, or even would-be tyrants. If Wizards is looking for a theme centered on larger-than-life heroes battling a dying world, Dark Sun’s harsh, post-apocalyptic tone could provide exactly that kind of champion-driven fantasy. Even if that’s not the case, 2026 is already shaping up to deliver an interesting new approach for this era of D&D.
