The Very Best FPS Games If You Want To Feel Absurdly OP

More so than most other genres, first-person shooters are just tailor-made for power fantasies that enable players to feel like unstoppable juggernauts. A few of the greatest FPS games for feeling OP are Doom, Halo, and indie darlings like Ultrakill, and they all deliver gameplay loops that are relatively different. They also come with unique weapons, mechanics, level structures, and tones.

Bulletstorm

Mayhem And Destruction Everywhere

  • Players can use environmental hazards to kill their enemies
  • Large variety of strange, yet complex weapons

Bulletstorm is one of those shooters that came out back when adult humor, ridiculous shooting mechanics, and compelling stories were the main attraction. This game not only rewards players for killing their enemies in different and creative ways, but it also allows them to feel extremely overpowered as they decimate the hordes of enemies before them.

Players can take advantage of the various weapons in the game and also use the environmental hazards around them, such as electricity, to deal with anyone who crosses their path. Bulletstorm‘s whip is a particularly satisfying OP weapon, and the campaign is tailor-made to allow players to cause as much mayhem as possible with it.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus

Challenging, But Skill Gives An Advantage

  • Over-the-top story
  • Players get new skills after a specific point in the game

When played on the hardest difficulty available, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus is by no means an easy game. However, as players progress through the story and get more comfortable with the shooting mechanics and the way enemies work, they might find it increasingly easier to deal with them.

8 Best FPS Games For An Over-The-Top Story, Ranked

FPS games are known for delivering an exciting experience full of action. Here are some titles in this genre that also feature over-the-top stories.

On top of this, players will get a few new special skills after a certain point in the game, which will further increase their ability to face any obstacles in their way. With an over-the-top story and a heartwarming sense of camaraderie, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus is, overall, a great title.

Trepang2

The Ultimate Super Soldier FPS Game

  • Slow-Motion and camouflage are constantly available (though they have timers)
  • Dual-wielding weapons is absurdly satisfying

In the last decade or so, boomer shooters have become incredibly common, to the point of over-exposure. Don’t get me wrong, games like Dusk, Cultic, Postal: Brain Damaged, and Slayers X are all bloody awesome throwbacks that work as OP fantasies, and I would recommend all of them. However, it is refreshing to play a modern game that takes inspiration from another era (or franchise) rather than the ’90s and Doom. Trepang2 is a spiritual successor to F.E.A.R., albeit with most missions focusing on action over horror.

You play essentially as a super soldier tasked with taking out bases and areas filled with enemies, including beings that have evolved beyond humanity. Even on the lower difficulties, Tepang2‘s AI enemies are fierce, demanding that players take an aggressive run-and-gun approach. Mowing down targets results in a burst of satisfying gore, and the weapons have fantastic feedback. While you aren’t overpowered compared to the bosses, you are definitely a one-man army when taking out most of the foot soldiers, and you can destroy dozens of enemies in quick succession. Once you pick up the ability to dual-wield most guns, Trepang2 goes from incredible to genre-defining.

Halo Infinite

Playing As Master Chief Is Always Empowering

  • The grappling hook makes the experience more fun
  • Many enemies cower in fear when they see the Master Chief

Ever since the first Halo game was released in the early 2000s, playing as the Master Chief has been extremely empowering, as players can deal with hordes of Covenant soldiers in the blink of an eye.

Granted, enemies like Elites, the Flood, and Brutes are not that easy to deal with. However, there’s just something very satisfying about seeing groups of Grunts running away from the Master Chief in horror as they yell “Demon!”. The addition of the grappling hook in Halo Infinite makes the experience even more entertaining and allows for combat mechanics to be more fast-paced. This, along with the various multiplayer maps available, makes the game great.

Cyberpunk 2077

Enough Cyberware And Weapon Upgrades Make V A Menace

  • Fast-paced action
  • Many weapons are broken in the best possible way

It’s fair to say that when Cyberpunk 2077 was first released, it wasn’t in the best condition. However, over the years, the game has been improved upon and patched significantly, delivering an outstanding experience that most players love nowadays. Cyberpunk 2077 not only features devastating weapons that can be upgraded, but also useful Cyberware augmentations that allow V to be overpowered. Cyberware like the Gorilla Arms makes it possible for V to throw devastating punches, turning their fists into a deadly weapon.

Due to being an RPG, Cyberpunk 2077 gives players plenty of options in crafting their version of V, allowing for a wide assortment of broken builds.

Borderlands 2

Several Weapons Deal Considerable Damage

  • Unique art style
  • Wide range of weapons to use

The Borderlands franchise is known for many things, including the different weapons at players’ disposal, and, of course, the distinctive artwork that the titles have. When the first game was released back in the late 2000s, many thought that it would just be another FPS game with nothing new to offer. However, this was quickly proven wrong as the amazing planet of Pandora presented players with endless opportunities to explore, face formidable enemies, and collect deadly weapons. All while also including greatly-timed humor and various interesting elements that complemented the experience well.

When Borderlands 2 was released, it managed to maintain the standards that its predecessor had established, while also improving on other aspects and implementing a few new elements of its own. The game features various weapons with considerable elemental damage, and, with enough skill, players will be the ultimate threat in Pandora. Those who’ve already completed every game of the franchise and want another title offering a similar experience will have no shortage of options.

We went with Borderlands 2 since it is the most beloved entry, but all the main games work as power fantasies.

DOOM Eternal

Slaying Hordes Of Demons To A Metal Soundtrack Is Amazing

  • The combat mechanics and music pair very well
  • Wide variety of weapons

The DOOM franchise has been around for more than three decades at the time of writing this article, and ever since the first title was released, players have had the chance to feel overpowered as they decimate hordes of demonic soldiers.

Modern graphics and hardware have raised the bar and allowed studios to give their games better mechanics and incredibly realistic graphics, which are some of the elements that make DOOM Eternal great. While the Ultra Nightmare is undoubtedly a challenge, with enough patience and skill, players can survive and send the vicious demonic forces back to hell. And if players want the ultimate feeling of being overpowered, any other difficulty will be perfect for it, making them the ultimate saviors of Earth. DOOM Eternal is, without a doubt, one of the toughest mainline FPS games out there, but others are even harder.

Doom and Doom: The Dark Ages also empower players, and all three games have surprisingly different gameplay loops.

Ultrakill

An FPS Power Fantasy All About Killing With Style And Skill

The best OP FPS games balance accessibility and skill. They give players a taste of power and then demand mastery to get the full course. Ultrakill might be the best example of this mantra, and the early access release really puts you through your paces. Although not impossible to just pick up and enjoy, the game comes with a fairly steep learning curve, both in terms of controls and speed. Players will also need to experiment with weapon interactions, as executing trick shots and combos leads to absurdly satisfying moments of carnage.

Ultrakill is a movement shooter revolving around dashes, slides, slams, and rockets, and these mechanics are just as important as weapons. Once players grow familiar with everything, they will start to clear out waves with just a few shots, and the game rewards them with really enjoyable chain kills.
