However, it is refreshing to play a modern game that takes inspiration from another era (or franchise) rather than the ’90s and Doom. Trepang2 is a spiritual successor to F.E.A.R., albeit with most missions focusing on action over horror.
You play essentially as a super soldier tasked with taking out bases and areas filled with enemies, including beings that have evolved beyond humanity. Even on the lower difficulties, Tepang2‘s AI enemies are fierce, demanding that players take an aggressive run-and-gun approach. Mowing down targets results in a burst of satisfying gore, and the weapons have fantastic feedback. While you aren’t overpowered compared to the bosses, you are definitely a one-man army when taking out most of the foot soldiers, and you can destroy dozens of enemies in quick succession. Once you pick up the ability to dual-wield most guns, Trepang2 goes from incredible to genre-defining.
