The WWE is losing one of its most beloved members, as Mick Foley has announced he’s parting ways with the company, due to its ties with President Donald Trump. Over the years, Mick Foley has graced the WWE stage and excited fans across the world, but Trump’s remarks about the recent death of director and writer Rob Reiner have moved him to break ties with the promoter.
Mick Foley is one of the most celebrated wrestlers in the sport. Back in 1996, when it was then known as the WWF, Foley became one of the key wrestlers who would define the Attitude Era. This era marked a turning point for WWE, as it thrust its stars even further into the spotlight, creating pop culture icons. Alongside Mick Foley, wrestlers like “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Rock, and Triple H would become some of the company’s biggest icons. Despite being retired, Foley has maintained a relationship with the WWE, but he’s made it clear that he no longer feels comfortable being part of the outfit because of Trump.
Earlier this week, American film icon Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were murdered in their Los Angeles home. Across the internet, fans and colleagues have been sharing their condolences and fond memories of the director. However, President Trump took to his Truth Social page, saying that Reiner’s death was caused by an “incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.” The remarks immediately ignited intense backlash from both sides of the aisle, and it was ultimately what inspired Foley to leave the WWE behind for good. The beloved wrestling icon shared his decision via Instagram. In the caption, he states that President Trump’s comments on Reiner’s death were the “final straw.” He went on to say, “I no longer wish to represent a company that coddles a man so seemingly void of compassion as he marches our country towards autocracy.”
President Trump has had ties with the WWE long before he got into politics, even being featured in the Battle of the Billionaires at WrestleMania 23. In the years since, he has maintained a relationship with Vince McMahon, going so far as to even appoint his wife, Linda McMahon, as his current education secretary. Even though he’s no longer a mainstay on the roster, Mick Foley leaving the WWE is a big hit to the company. President Trump’s comments aren’t the only reason for his departure, either. Foley further explained that, “I have been concerned about WWE’s close relationship with Donald Trump for several months — especially in light of his administration’s ongoing cruel and inhumane treatment of immigrants.” The comments regarding Reiner’s death were simply what sealed the deal for Foley.
Over the course of his time with the WWE, Mick Foley has been known by several personas. In addition to his own name, he’s taken on the beloved characters of Cactus Jack, Mankind, and Dude Love.
Despite his confirmation that he’s leaving the company, it won’t be official until June. The wrestling legend explained that his contract is still active until then, but once it expires, he has zero intention of signing a new one. It’s been a shocking week for WWE fans, as not only has Mick Foley announced his departure, but John Cena’s last match ended in a loss. Foley announcing he’s leaving WWE is bound to be a sad moment for a lot of his fans.
