Resident Evil 2 director Hideki Kamiya has suggested Capcom makes a “non-scary mode” for games in its iconic horror series.
Kamiya – who “hates horror games” – was enjoying some Resident Evil Requiem fun times with members from his own studio Clovers, when he remarked that Capcom should include a mode for those among us who aren’t so keen on getting scared by zombie mutants.
When another one of his team piped up that a non-scary mode would kind of defeat the purpose of the games, Kamiya joked: “Look, I just want to enjoy the puzzles… the puzzles and the combat. I don’t need the scary stuff.” He also commented on Leon Kennedy’s more mature look in Requiem, noting he isn’t a “spring chicken anymore”.
It is a pretty endearing little snippet into life at Clovers, and amusing to see the man that gave us Resident Evil 2 admit he is a bit of a scaredy cat. Not that this is the first time Kamiya has shared his aversion to horror. Just yesterday, the Capcom vet also asked Resident Evil Requiem’s team to add a “not scary mode” for the game, “where the zombies get all cute, the blood splatters turn into cherry blossom petals, the music becomes this upbeat, feel-good kind of tune, and you can just purely enjoy the puzzles and battles in a fun mood…”
Resharing a post announcing a new story expansion for Resident Evil Requiem, Kamiya said: “I wanna play it, but it’s so scary that I can’t sleep alone at night anymore, so I just can’t bring myself to play… Think about how people like that feel…”
I won’t lie, this idea has made me smile. While I am personally fine with Resident Evil Requiem as it is, I would also kind of love to see cherry blossom petals burst forth from a zombie’s head after a spot of chainsaw action.
Earlier this month, Capcom revealed Resident Evil Requiem had surpassed 5m sales in less than a week, and this success is well deserved. We recently awarded Resident Evil Requiem five stars, with our Matt calling it “both a masterful bit of suffocating horror and a nostalgic, fan-thrilling victory lap for the legendary series”. Soon after its debut, Requiem saw the biggest concurrent Steam player count in Resident Evil history.
As for Kamiya and Clovers, the team is currently working on a sequel to Okami.
