A two-year old Steam game just quadrupled its player count

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora has seen a major boost in its player count throughout recent weeks, with the game seeing a major spike likely connected to the new Avatar movie. Beginning with the overwhelmingly successful movie by James Cameron, Avatar has blossomed into a full-fledged media empire. The first Avatar movie became the highest-grossing film of all time during its original 2009 run, later expanding to novels, stage productions, and video games, among several other forms of media. Now, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is getting a big boost on Steam from the franchise’s newest movie.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora served as one of the franchise’s biggest video game launches yet, set on the world of Pandora. The game allows players to explore the world of the Avatar franchise, utilizing a mix of modern and Na’vi weapons to fight against RDA forces on the planet. The Avatar game debuted to a largely mixed reception from fans and critics, praising Frontiers of Pandora‘s world and combat while criticizing the game’s reliance on the Na’vi Vision mechanic for its exploration and puzzle-solving. However, a new update and movie may have been just the injection of life Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora needed.

Fans of first-person RPGs should keep an eye on this new Steam game, which seems to be an exciting mix of Skyrim, Dark Souls, and For Honor.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora’s Player Count is Climbing Rapidly

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora has seen a major spike in its player count on Steam, with the game more than quadrupling its previous peaks. Popular aggregator SteamDB shows Frontiers of Pandora boasts a current all-time peak of 12,496 players, with the game’s charts showing the counts rising throughout December. While 12,000 may not be the most impressive count, Frontiers of Pandora‘s December peak is a significant jump from its previous peak player count, only registering at just above 2,600 players. Many fans have attributed the game’s recent success to a combination of factors, stemming largely from the premiere of the newest Avatar movie and a new update to Frontiers of Pandora in early December.

Frontiers of Pandora got one of its biggest updates yet in early December, coinciding with the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash. The “From the Ashes” expansion introduced some brand-new story content to the game, with the new update placed just a few weeks after the new movie in the timeline. Developer Massive Entertainment also added a new third-person mode to the game in December, with fans able to step back from the first-person view for the first time since the game’s release. Frontiers of Pandora even added a New Game+ mode, with players able to retain their inventory and skills within the enhanced playthrough.

The Avatar Franchise is Far From Over

The launch of the Frontiers of Pandora expansion and Fire and Ash comes as the franchise still has lots more coming in the future. Avatar: Fire and Ash debuted as the third movie in the franchise, following up on the successful 2022 sequel Avatar: The Way of Water. 20th Century Studios has also already confirmed that more Avatar movies are on the way in the future, with a fourth Avatar movie currently set to premiere in 2029 and a fifth in 2031. Avatar also has another game in the works, with Avatar: Reckoning currently in development as a mobile-exclusive shooter.

A lush forest in Avatar Frontiers of Pandora

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora‘s recent resurgence has seen plenty of new fans taking a look at the game. Frontiers of Pandora is currently on sale as part of Steam’s ongoing Winter Sale, marked down by 33% until the sale ends on January 5. The Avatar game has also received two previous expansions, with The Sky Breaker and Secrets of the Spire both adding new locations for players to explore within Pandora. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora‘s newfound success poses good tidings for the future of the game, with the new movie and expansion clearly landing well.
