Battlefield 6 Has Great News for Console Players

Battlefield 6 developer Battlefield Studios has confirmed that the upcoming shooter will allow PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S users to continue matchmaking with each other when crossplay is turned off, thus allowing for console-only crossplay. As first-person shooters continue to battle against cheaters on PC, Battlefield 6’s decision to allow for console-only crossplay is great news for PlayStation and Xbox users.

While a console-only crossplay feature is a great way to keep fans happy, it’s far from a solution to the cheating problem live-service titles often face. Thankfully, Battlefield Studios is well aware of what it’s up against and has also said it’s taking cheating “extremely seriously.” Last month, the studio announced that Battlefield 6 will launch with EA’s proprietary anti-cheat software known as Javelin. Although there were a few issues with the system during the shooter’s open beta, such as asking players to delete Valorant from their systems, its kernel-level tools will ensure that cheaters find it much more difficult to ruin other players’ experience in Battlefield 6.

Battlefield 6 Confirms Console-Only Crossplay

Of course, software such as Javelin reduces the number of cheaters, but it doesn’t eradicate them. So, for console players who don’t want to risk running into cheaters in their lobbies, Battlefield Studios is allowing Battlefield 6 players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S to continue matchmaking with each other, even when crossplay is turned off. The feature was confirmed in a new interview with IGN, where senior console combat designer Matthew Nickerson said, “Console-only crossplay happens if you turn it off. When you flip that switch, then you get, basically, console-only crossplay, and that is, we don’t fill with PC players.”

In the same interview, Battlefield Studios also touched upon the persistent controversy surrounding unrealistic cosmetic items in Call of Duty, Fortnite, and potentially Battlefield. As publisher Activision is being forced to backtrack on its “goofy” store bundles and cosmetics for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Battlefield Studios has reassured players that Battlefield 6’s skins will remain realistic and match the overall theme of the game, which will be a “gritty, realistic shooter.”

There’s still just under a month left to go until Battlefield 6 launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, but those who are eager to see more of the game’s single-player campaign don’t have long left to wait. With Tokyo Game Show 2025 right around the corner, EA has confirmed its presence at the event and revealed that it will be showing more of Battlefield 6’s campaign on September 26.
