Battlefield 6, EA’s latest and (hopefully) greatest, looks promising to say the least. Given what I saw in the leaked beta testing and the new trailer, I wholeheartedly admit my hype. However, I hear a battle royale mode is coming to BF6, and seriously, does it really need it?
According to Insider Gaming’s Sam Sepiol, Battlefield 6 is set to get a battle royale mode, but that it won’t be available at launch (supposedly October 10). And here I am thinking if such a mode should be in the game at all, given that the BR hype is all but a thing of the past.
No Battlefield game has had a BR mode before and the franchise has, to varying degrees, maintained its serious and gritty tone, which Call of Duty has all but lost what with Nicki Minaj running around with a laser rifle turning you into piles of ash. Yeah, that used to be a down-to-earth military shooter in the yesteryears.
With Battlefield 6 looking as promising as it does, I simply think there shouldn’t be any addition or influx of trend-chasing modes like battle royale. Not to mention that that trend is as dead as they get, with people hopping on because it’s usually free-to-play. Just look at any popular BR game today: PUBG is dominantly played on mobile as a F2P game, not even God knows what Fortnite is about anymore, and Warzone is slowly eroding with Activision pouring endless resources into providing it with life support.
Do we really want such stuff to happen, again, to a Battlefield game? Chasing trends and adding stuff that was “popular” but not aligned with the BF formula is precisely what killed 2042. Turning classes into heroes and going for 100-player servers are tropes of 2021 and other shooters popular at the time.
Battle royale hasn’t been the craziest thing with the kids for years now, and just like those tropy 2021 additions, it wouldn’t fit well into the Battlefield framework.
I would say I trust DICE to make it fit, but given what the studio put out last time, it does not inspire confidence, so I think BR is better left to the history books.
